Grinning Skull Studios Patreon Launched!

5 Sep

patreon bar2

Well, it’s been ages but I finally did it, launched the Grinning Skull Patreon page. This had been on the back boiler for a hell of a long time, but due to life commitments and other stuff, I had always put it off. Partly because I think I didn’t quite get what it all meant, but after long drawn out studies of the whole thing, I decided it was the right time.

So, I guess you are wondering what it all means? Well, for those out there who don’t know about Patreon, is that it’s a way for people like yourself to help support independent creators (such as little old me) and keep the lights on here, free to create more content and push forward. It is also a way to interact and take a role in shaping future stuff and stay ahead with news and so forth with said creators.

To go directly over to Patreon, check it out here:

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Star Hat Miniatures: Heroic Scale Metal Figures Kickstarter

11 Aug

Well, how could I not feature this KS, given that the tagline for these minis is “Delvers Lost in the Dungeons of Doom!” it’s pretty much right up my alley! Star Hat miniatures are a company I haven’t come across before, but they have my attention now!

As you will gather, these are a set of generic adventurer types typical for dungeon exploration as per the usual RPG/wargaming fantasy fare. There is an old skool feeling to these, very similar to some ancient citadel sculpts and a few other older UK miniature firms work, which is a good thing, although some purists might disagree.

I like them, that’s for sure, and there are more than enough options for classes that’d fit many an RPG group needing some miniatures to fit their party for some dungeon bashing tomfoolery!

I feel that the only criticism I can aim at Star Hat Miniatures, is that the “Dungeons of Doom” moniker is used, and i should be at least getting a free set of them to pay for the favorable review and the royalty bonus for using that in the set title! But joking aside, they look fine to me and (hint, hint!) If you ever want me to review a set in person on here, please do!!!

No doubt this KS will be fully funded, as it’s already almost there, but do your bit and check them out if old skool D&D type figures is your thing. Check out the link to visit the project KS page for more info:

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Miniature Wargaming the Movie

1 Jul

It seems like an age has passed since I did a Crowdfunding Spotlight here, so I thought I’d draw attention to this very interesting documentary, all about the roots and whole aspect of the miniature wargaming hobby.

Containing interviews from industry luminaries, as well as the up and coming too, all in all it sounds like a great watch, and something different too (Well, as far as I know, there haven’t been any such documentaries before, let alone a movie!!) It’s something that we as a community should be supporting and doing our bit, so even if you won’t be donating to the cause, I’d emplore that you share the links to the KS page, to make sure that the film gets 100% funded in time (I’m pretty sure it will, since at the moment of writing it’s hit just over £7,000 of the target £10K needed!)

You can check out the KS page here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/954318608/miniature-wargaming-the-movie-0 and the website http://miniaturewargamingthemovie.com/ for more details on the project.

Good Luck guys!!

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Table Top Blocks Kickstarter

20 Oct

Compared to the Encounter elements set from the previous crowdfunding spotlight, this terrain block system looks like something you’d find in a primary school (very similar to the counting block type learning toy you do still find, trust me, I have two under 7’s!) Again some of you will be calling me the Simon Cowell of the gaming crowdfunder reviewers and coming across negatively, but fate will conspire to put a spanner in the works, especially when you consider the untimely nature of the starting of both similar gaming block systems at the same time period. All I can think is that it’s got to hurt either one or both. Personally I think the Encounter elements set is the clear winner here in look and style.

Although this set wins out on colour choices to represent different terrain, it does so with absence of any real visual appeal, this is even more basic than the last, but at least the previous had more to it. Also I think what scores against it for me, is the blue ones look very similar to the cold packs you get inside cooler bags and boxes!

I told you! Look, its not my intention to pull down an active project in case it effects its cause, but I’m just being honest, anyway thats how this whole thing works, simply by putting this up for the world to see and hopefully fund, indeed we are possibly setting one self up for a fall (Trust me, I tried and made an epic fail, so I know it aint easy)

Check out the vid and visit the link for the whole pitch for your cash, and as ever, let me know what you think in the comments below.
