40K 8th Ed: Deathguard Army: Custom Hellbrute W.I.P. 1

8 Jun

So I’m trying to get some kind of 8th edition 40k nurgle Deathguard army together, just to get back into the game (haven’t played it since 4th edition) but I really wanted to use as much customised and independent companies stuff instead of GW’s VERY expensive stuff.

Don’t get me wrong, I love their stuff, but being a tight Yorkshireman, and a die hard converter & customiser, a mix of models I like rather than “official” minis is what I’m after.

So, I want to show my current Hellbrute WIP.

It’s base model is the often overlooked Scotia Grendel Leviathan War Golem (found here: http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=292 )

I’ve only just started putting some colours and a bit of drybrushing down on it, but I’m loving the way it’s coming out so far! Here’s a shot from the back.

I’ve added quite a bit of extra nurgley goodness, and am expecting it to turn out lovely (can you say lovely about anything Nurgle?)

Let me know what you think. I’ll be back later to show case some more of my growing forces (finished stuff that is…)

Rogue Stars: Let the ideas start to flow!

16 Sep

So, with Osprey’s Rogue Stars ( Rogue Stars: Skirmish Wargaming in a Science Fiction Underworld (Osprey Wargames) ) winging its way to me through the post (yes, I succumbed to it in the end, the temptation was far too great!) I really look forward to getting it so I can have a really good read to ingest all the lovely space opera flavour I’m hoping there to be!

I’ve not really had much chance to peruse any osprey wargames rules other than Frostgrave, but I have read my share of other Osprey books (I absolutely love the Jason and the Argonauts book, review of which is here: Osprey Adventures: Jason and the Argonauts Review)

All these ideas flowing, with plenty more to come I expect, especially when I get a good browse at the rules and fluff has got me thinking. I am going to need a new baseboard or two and maybe some playing mats, plus a fair bit of 28mm scifi scenery will need to be made, not to mention getting the minis together (I think I have plenty of miniatures to fit this game already, but I have seen a load that I wouldn’t mind getting…!)

I’ll try my best to do to create more min scenic tutorials, just like the Grim’s Dungeons of Doom series!

What I would like to do is take this opportunity to invite you on my journey too, I’ll document my thoughts, ideas, miniatures purchases & painting, scenery tutorials and so forth, similar to Grim’s Dungeons of Doom and even share any battle reports along the way.

Both spotlights are working! There will be no escape for trespassers!

I suppose that this is going to start me off with a new article series as a result, but I reckon that those 28mm Sci-fi gamers of you out there (especially warhammer 40k, Oldskool Rogue Trader and other Sci-fi wargames that are available) will find plenty of useful stuff for them to justify it.

I’m thinking that I’ll make an interior set of terrain similar to Grim’s Dungeons of Doom, but not too much, that way it’ll be interchangeable with the walls, floors and other fantasy scenic stuff (the cavern walls will fit nicely in an Alien planet theme, maybe some alien flora and fauna, but then I’m going to have to do a few 28mm Sci-fi buildings and maybe something along the lines of the old Necromunda scenery from the 90’s. Where ever possible, I’ll point you in the way of useful resources and info too, which will be a nice change to 15mm model making in the Sci-fi wargaming I’ve got used to.

Like I’ve said, I imagine that there’s going to be loads of ideas free-flowing, but I really want to know what you think too. Is there anything I should be trying out? What scenics do you want to see me make? Just let me know by commenting below,  tell me about your ideas or your experience of Rogue Stars gameplay.

I’ll be back later with some possible miniature choices, that is, once I’ve plundered my lead piles…:)

Osprey’s Rogue Stars: Is it any good? Give me your recommendations?

5 Sep

So, been browsing about, and I’ve noticed Rogue Stars: Skirmish Wargaming in a Science Fiction Underworld (Osprey Wargames), which has caught my eye with a prospect of getting it. I absolutely know jack s**t about it, only that it seems like an attempt at a mini skirmish game attempt from Osprey to get some of that sweet Star Wars/Guardians of the Galaxy/Marvel Cosmic type of vibe going on! Which is exactly why I’m attracted to it in the first place.

Thing is, I’ve got a habit of collecting miniatures that don’t really fit anywhere else, just loads of weird and wonderful little lead men (and creatures) that would seem that I could actually put them to use in a game of this. I’ve got CP models Avians that spring to mind to start with, but just looking at my lead piles, I could easily find a shed load of possibles. Only thing is, is Rogue Stars any good? North Star is doing a funky looking mini line, which a few of them look pretty cool

It’s got ok reviews, but some are not so good. Some say it’s got a Rogue Trader-esque feel to the whole approach, so that keeps me interested, but I’m still sitting on the fence about it.

If you have any info, or have played it,  let me know your views on the game, and see if you’ll persuade me to buy it, I hope so, I do love making sci-fi scenics and terrain. I can see it now…A new series of terrain tutorials, “Grim’s Dark Futures…”!

Grinning Skull’s Oddball Outlet: Custom Gamer Chests for sale!

29 Aug

Hello there everyone, In a departure from the usual stuff we have on sale from Grinning Skull Studios, I’d like to show you some physical product for once. Oddball Outlet is a term coined by yours truly, to describe any stuff I’ll be putting out to sell. I have quite a few gaming items coming up for grabs, so keep your eyes peeled.

In a throwback to previous products I’ve done before, I still like to turn my hand to actual objects, so these came about after quite a few private customers requested me to create these hand crafted & finished babies. So, after a successful batch run of our custom Gamer prop chests, I have decided to offer the rest of this batch for sale via eBay sales. I’ll be finishing more over time, but only to use up my remaining stock parts, so these are very limited (I’m not currently taking custom commission orders for these at this point, but might do so in the future, so if you are wanting a truly custom creation, get in touch and we’ll chat…)

These lovely hand finished, custom boxes are perfect for you fantasy gamers out there (but, of course, I’d say that!) So, without further ado, I’ll let the pics do the talking!

As you can see, the above chest, titled “The Arcane Herbalist”, is jam packed with trinkets and stuff, perfect as a gift, or spoil yourself and use as a display piece or prop for gaming, the choice is yours. It could be yours for £30 with free UK postage. You can find the listing for the “Arcane Herbalist” Chest over on eBay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132310231240?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649

This box, “The Fortune Teller” includes all sorts of fortune telling gubbins, it even comes with it’s very own crystal ball. Again it’s perfect as a gift, or a treat to yourself! This comes in at £30 with free UK postage. You can find the detailed listing on eBay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132310239265?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Lastly, we have a standard small gamer chest. These contain 20 coin counters, and a full set of gaming dice. these smaller boxes are ideal to keep your various gaming trinkets inside, or for whatever use you’d like. This hand finished box is available for £18 (again with free UK P&P) and can be found here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132310243617?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

If you’d like to take a closer look at these fine wares, click on the links and it will take you to the eBay page of the product. Also, like I said before, I’m not really taking up new commissions for these (for those of you after custom pieces that is) but may be tempted if you are after something that sounds like it’d be interesting to make (then I may be interested in doing it) reasons being, my time is limited and these take up more than I’d like.

I’ll also apologise for any overseas readers who might be interested, so that being said, I might consider international shipping and purchase, but I would need to sort out shipping prices and insurance etc. Get in touch and we’ll have a chat, but I’m not promising anything (Gimme a good incentive, that might work!)

I’ll be putting some more stuff up over the next few days, lots of 40k books and so on, so keep your eyes peeled!

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Tikki Trolls Tribe Miniatures Mortal Arrow Kickstarter

15 Jun

I just have to point you to these unique troll miniatures from Mortal Marrow Miniatures. Given a Tiki theme to differate them from the normal trollish miniature offerings that are out there, a full tribe, if not a full war horde of these can be put together with all the individual options available here.

I am an avid troll mini collector (and I’ve covered other articles with a troll theme before like Big Bastards, and my two headed Troll sculpt and so on, if you’re interested!) and if I had spare funds going, I certainly would be backing this one. They are extremely old school, while still being different enough to be unique to stand on their own. What I like about the indie mini industry is that even so we see the same tropes used, again and again, the interpretation of the themes are sometimes totally different and ends up for making some really special models.

This monstrous pedipalp here from the project is a great figure, and shows the free thinking of Mortal Arrow with their regard to creating. I’d also suggest that you check out Mortal Arrow’s website too (http://www.mortalarrow.com/) and see some their other stuff and background fluff to go with their ranges, which is a jolly good read!

Go and find out more from either the link below to visit the KS project page, or like I said above, check their website and see what you think! There’s plenty of time to decide if you want to become a backer, but make no mistake, the project is funded so they’ll be going into production for those wanting their own Tiki Trolls! Well done guys!
