Corona-Chaos, Brain Block, and Community Calamity (or What’s been going on here in this Quiet Apocalypse!)

Well, hello there! Hope you are doing well in this Covid19 crisis. I thought that since I have a little time to myself, I might as well check in and let you know that me and my clan are doing well, if not suffering a bit from cabin fever! It’s UK lock down day number “fuck knows anymore” as I find myself and my past routines totally gone out the window, and what I thought was going to be a productive time of writing, art, crafting, sculpting and other creative endeavors, but alas things have not gone to plan!

Pretty much most of my plans have been cancelled due to the dreaded corona, and my lock down experience has consisted of DIY jobs, Gardening and childcare duties.
Any spare time after that I could have done anything productive has had me beat and tired, so most of my stuff has stalled. Artistic/creative block is not great in this game, but during lock down, sales have been steady so I can’t complain!
I’m pretty sure that having ALL my fam under my feet, ALL the time, doesn’t give much quiet time to flourish creativity, so will be happy when the virus is a distant memory, and the new world emerges from the darkness.

Seriously, over the last few weeks I’ve dealt with, constant aggravation from various close family and those nearby, which I found quite amusing to begin with, only to me having to stop people from ragging each other! I won’t elaborate further, but I swear that this whole thing is sending people mad. I don’t joke as I say this, the community around me has a chaos factor that just simmers under the surface constantly as the collective frustration of family, friends and neighbors rises into a fetid puss filled blister or abscess, that I’m keeping out of as much as I can when all the shit kicks off! Time to get out the popcorn and get ringside seats here, cos’ that cyst is gonna pop its stinky rage filled load. All I can say, is that I have the beginnings of a good Whodunit novel! Certain people need to honestly calm the fook down and take some time to think of those around them, show some respect and be right, or things will not turn out well, and I’m not involving myself. It reminds me of an over population of caged rats, and how they turn on each other. Oh these stupid humans!! Come and take me away space brothers!!

My problems don’t end there. Had to shut any Ebay listings I had going (and loose out of loads of sales as a result) due to my local post office “friendly and helpful”staff giving me hassle for posting items out! They are quite possibly the worst, miserable little bitches to ever run a local post office. It’s not like I have ever been nasty or impolite to them, but with most of these snotty nosed pieces of shit types, would literally turn away customers, because they think they can “police”you to make sure you are only going out for essential food/medicine (which I assure you, I was doing at the same time). If I could post stuff out any other way, I would, deny them of my cash. Yes I can use UPS or Hermes, but unless I’m sending something substantial, I don’t use a courier. Besides, UPS and Herpes/Hermes aren’t that good a service in my opine, so they can go fuck as well!

I have though, managed some painting and modelling (not enough in my eyes) so I’ve got some eye candy coming for you if you like looking at painted miniature porn!
Also I am working on making some accompanying video to add to the posts. It won’t be anything special, but I see it as adding a little extra depth, I don’t think I’ll ever be a Youtube sensation or anything, but my eldest progeny have both offered their services to create me some titles and do some editing, so I can just film the footage I want and not have the hassle of editing vids.

Maybe I’ll get into the swing of getting nice looking footage uploaded on a regular basis overtime, but I’m not fussed overall and I’ll see how it goes.
You might be thinking I’m being rather negative about stuff, but I’m not too stressed and keeping my patience (I think doing a lot of work in my garden has mellowed me out) and I keep in mind, that at least I have a big garden to escape to, as there are entire families suffering worse than I right now, so I’m greatful for that.

I’ve never been one for constant social media updates, so me dropping off the map is not unusual for me, I did think it was about time for me to pop up and tell you I’m not dead yet! I’ve got probably a month’s worth of daily mini related posts in the wings, so check it out if it pops up on your internets!!

I do hope that you lot are fairing well during the crisis and hope you don’t all self destruct (if you are struggling with the situation) any time soon.

Stick with it and remember, I should be over soon. Then all we’ll have to do is deal with the worst global recession for something like 300 years (so they say!)

Keep grinning in the face of adversity and I’ll see you all soon!

Grimthorpe East Progress Diary #1: Test shots and models.

31 Jan

cap t 1

Just thought I would keep you up to date with the progress here, which has been a bit behind due to some minor ills and a virus (No not the Corona virus, yet…) This has left me being behind with the latest Adventurer’s Post scenario, and the scheduled Pointless Classics edition, but no fear, they are still coming.

Anyway, progress is good on the Grimthorpe East set, with around 20+ building kits done or almost done. Some require a little adjustment before I carry on, but these are minor woes overall, and things are coming along nicely. The intention is to include around 50 buildings at least, plus accessories and stuff, enough to give you a good selection and variation for your builds, plus I’m trying to keep them as simple as possible to reduce build time.

cap7

After a test print or three (or six, or more!) to check for levels and such, I think they are turning out pretty good. Again, some of the kits need a little adjustment, but all is on track. When I’ve progressed a bit further, I’ll be doing more test prints…Lots of test prints!

cap2

Doing a bit of simple maths, I figure that the end product will fit around 26-30 house models on the playing area. I have still to test this, but it sounds about right. The accessories included should fill gaps here and there, but you can simply expand the area by printing another 3×3, or even just an extra 3 to add on, it’s totally up to you!

cap6

I have considered a 15mm version, but to be honest, since you can print the set at a reduced size, there’s probably no real need to do so. We will have to see what happens and what mood takes me!

cap3

Once the set is out, I’ll be adding more options by releasing smaller collections to add to the line, things like a big church/temple, castles, keeps, and all manner of specialised buildings, but at first, it’ll be just basics in the core set.

cap4

I’m thinking of a modern version using the same system, just for a change, although this won’t be Grimthorpe, but another place for modern gamers. Possibly some zombie themed stuff, but that’s in the future. Whatever happens, all these sets should be 100% compatible with other manufacturers paper model kits, so you can mix and match to your hearts content! There’s no reason you can’t use this set with other titles in our current ranges, check out the section over on DriveThruRPG in our paper model titles to give you some idea!

cap5

I haven’t started on the accessory sheets and extras, but I have a load of ideas of what I’m going to include. Carts and Market stalls are the first on my list, but sheds, gardens, fences, monuments and more will be done too. Let me know if you have any ideas which you think I should be included!

cap1

I’m also considering some background elements, although I’m not too sure just yet. As you can see from the mock up, it does add some additional ambiance, but I haven’t decided yet. Maybe I might make a few building fronts in partial 3D to add to the edge of the playing board, sort of like the Railway modelling community does for their set ups, although I don’t know if I would be best served bringing these bits out as additional titles. I do think they will look nice on the end set ups, but with so many ideas, I don’t want to add too much to the core set, or I might not have any ideas left for future sets!

The finished set will be available on both DriveThruRPG and our Payhip store, and I’ll ask that if you haven’t checked both of them out, please have a look, where you’ll find a load of unique and varied titles from Grinning Skull Studios.

I’ll be back later with more updates, and as ever, please comment and feel free to let me know what you think about any aspect of this or any of our other stuff!!

Busy, Busy, Busy… Lost down the rabbit hole at Grinning Skull Towers…

3 Nov

Busy, Busy, Busy…

Well, as you can imagine, my lack of presence here posting means I’ve been busy and somewhat distracted with all sorts of things of late. Things have been happening that have meant I haven’t had the chance to update the site as much as I’d have liked to.

I’d have liked to put more on here, such as updates and such (and yes, I do have stuff to tell you about!) but organisation isn’t my greatest strong point, so I’ll be posting some catch-up stuff shortly, which I hope some of you will be interested in. Also I’d like to point out that of late the posts that I have been putting out, have to me at least, seem to have been a little salesy-spammy which is something I don’t like to do here that much, I feel that while it’s important to update online current Grinning Skull related merch and releases, good content is king, so loads of adverts don’t sit well and I’d much prefer to put out some articles that I feel that you lot would appreciate and get something out of.

Of course, I’m going to have to advertise my shit, but I don’t want anyone to feel like I’m becoming the metorphorical Jehovas Witness of the hobby world, that annoying twat who’s always flogging their brand of gaming religion to everyone who clearly ain’t listening! It’s a balancing act that is getting more difficult to do, as you appreciate things like Grim’s Dungeons of Doom tutorials take some time and planning to get sorted, so other stuff on the content creation side gets priority over free stuff. that’s not to say that I won’t be posting articles like that, on the contrary, I’m planning right now a new series of tutorials to coincide with my forays into my lot playing Osprey’s Rogue Stars, something which I’m lacking a table full of 28mm Sci-fi scenery and painted models, which need to be done for us to play. Sci-fi terrain making is my preferred theme (as you might have guessed by the 15mm stuff I’ve done on here) but I’m guessing that this will appeal to the 40k crowd as well as other 28mm sci-fi gamers too.

Also, I’m planning a PDF digest or two of “Grim’s Dungeons of Doom” material from the articles already published. I’ll be cleaning it up, adding new bits, articles and pics and collating it in a nice ebook format for download over on our various DriveThruRPG, RPGnow and Wargamevault publisher store pages, and possibly a limited print copy run if there’s a few who are interested.

On the Grinning Skull Miniatures front, there’s also stuff going on, and some of you might know new releases are afoot, last month saw the Little Killa clowns released from Alternative Armies. We are also gearing up for more new releases in the line, B.E.A.R.S., Klorzid mutant plants, more Zarglian Invaders are forthcoming, so expect to see more about these in the near future. Also, whilst I haven’t had much opportunity to get some sculpting done due to time commitments, that is not to say my ideas are dead in the water, and I have a whole heap of mad ideas for other models in the line, and also some more traditional miniatures I’d like to pump out in some way shape or form. The Grinning Skull miniature line was always intended to push the envelope with unusual and weird models that are not seen anywhere else, so expect more in the way of my bizarre brainfarts. Things like Giant Killer babies, Alien Starship crews, genetically modified sentient fruit and veg, plus more additions to the Zarglian Empire, Evil X-TED teddies, malfunctioning robotic psychos, more killer clowns & Circus freaks, more alien monsters and maybe a few Chukk and Oggum too!

Also, I’d like to turn my hand to some more traditional fantasy miniatures, since the Grinning Skull line is more Sci-fi weirdness, I’d like to get some of my trademark stylings into my own interpretation of the usual fantasy fare. I have tons of concept sketches and notes for things like Trolls, Goblins, and some of my own inventions I’ve come up with.
Grimlins (a imp-like race of demonic creatures), Trolkyn (Small troll related infantry that would serve as Goblin and Orc Proxies) and Monstaaz (Comedy demonesque minion critters that would serve as cannon fodder in chaos or demon armies) Couple these with a load of big beasties, Trolls, Ogres, Giants, Minotaurs, and a whole heap of my interpretations of creatures, and you have what I’d like to call something like “Fantasical Freaks” or “Brain Damage” Miniatures, a separate line from Grinning Skull Minis, but how long it’ll be before these ideas will materialise into the real world is unknown as yet, but it’s part of my long-term plan. Maybe these will figure in a future Kickstarter or Indiegogo crowdfunder, although this time it’ll be better planned and executed!

However, ideas are one thing, doing the legwork or simply having time and resources to bring these into the flesh are another. I’m resonably confident 95% or more of these will see the light of day, that is providing new things don’t take precedence over them or I kick the bucket, or something strange happens (Alien abduction, trapped in a mirror realm, dimensional wormhole, lost in a prehistoric world etc.)

On top of all this, we’ll be ploughing ahead with more PDF releases as usual, as we head to almost 200 titles, I want to celebrate this milestone, with something special around the new year (Got a few ideas, but you’ll have to wait) and plans for more to come in 2018, plus I want to see if we can get to 400 before 2018 is out!!

As ever, I welcome your comments, ideas, feedback, and thoughts, plus I’m always up for collabs and such like projects if you’re interested in stuff like that!

Next up will be an October End of the month round-up, plus More Grinning Skull Miniatures stuff.

Grim.

Skulltaliser Update: WE DID IT!

26 May

Well, we’ve done it, funds raised and ready to go! I knew we’d do it before the month’s end.

Next, it’ll be monetisation time, an upgrade of the site. Please accept my thanks for all the encouragement and views for going along with my brainfarts, for once it’s given me some focus to get something done that I’d been wanting to do for a long time!

You’ll be seeing some big changes here over the next couple of months, so I hope you’ll go on this journey with me as I grow the site!!

Thanks!!!
