As you know, I’m all for money saving when it comes to gaming, and I also love toy hacks, so I wanted to share this post from over on http://cloudcraftsite.wordpress.com, check out some of his other awesome posts by visiting his blog.

Anyway, this top 5 has some cool stuff that can be easily converted for your games and models, plus links to places you can get them!!

If you like cheap toy hacks, also check out The giant scorpion toy hack and The bag “o” Skeletons review from the archive!!

The following are just some Cheap Toys I’ve found while browsing the net that I think would have excellent potential for Table Top Gaming, whether it’s just giving them a quick paint job, or Kit-Bashing them to the point where the original model is unrecognizable (or you get the “WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!?” reaction from your friends).

Item Number One: True Legends Mythical Warriors

This bucket of fantasy figures was reviewed by Fungeon Master Dave O’Gara (will post link in a moment) and I can see a few figures that have potential as either Ogres for Dungeons and Dragons / Pathfinder, or as Kit-bashed Demon Princes of Nurgle or Khorne for Warhammer/Warhammer 40k. The Sorceress looking figures would probably make for good kit-bash material for a Demon Prince of Tzneetch or Slaanesh. The terrain that comes with this set is also fairly decent, and I would not hesitate to…

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Zed or Alive: Zombie skirmish ruleset by Rust Devil Games Kickstarter

19 Mar

As you know, I’m into zombie wargames, so this caught my eye, its called Zed or alive from Dust devil games and they currently have a kickstarter campaign to fund its creation. Yes, I know, there are quite a few zombie skirmish rulesets coming onto the market at the moment, but there’s always room for more!

They’ve already surpassed their $3000 goal, so this is pretty much a dead cert, and since its based on the Savage world system, it’s already got a good pedigree and existing fan base. I like the slick look to it, and I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on a copy, even if it’s just to read! A lot of you might add that the title bears more than a passing coincidence to a certain X-box game series that is one of my favourites (L4D) but maybe thats why I’m attracted to it in the first place!

The good thing is that you can use whatever figures you like for the game (human survivors and zombies of course) and can be used for 28mm and even 15mm (hooray!!) Loads of miniature companies have allowed photos of their great figures inside, which also lends to the finished look of the book, so its no surprise many have already jumped aboard.

If you want to take a closer look and maybe get involved as a backer in the campaign, click the link below and check it out!

What do you do when you’ve lost your hobby mojo?

5 Feb

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

No matter what lately, I haven’t been able to focus on all aspects of the hobby (I mean miniature wargaming, not the “GW” hobby!) I think that it’s been due to recent illness with my knee trouble, general awfulness and now some weird throat type virus that has fallen upon my kids and myself, but never the less, it’s left me more uninspired to do as much as I would usually.

I have a low attention span at the best of times, so I do find it hard to concentrate at the best of times, so things that throw a spanner in the works tend to throw me off kilter somewhat. Add to this, the usual chaos of the modern family life with it’s ups and downs, that kind of stuff can put my spare time input to almost a standstill.
But these last few days, try as I might, I can’t seem to find my mojo! I’ve tried as many different disciplines of the hobby as a whole, miniatures in a variety of sizes and scales, terrain and model making, even been trying to sculpt 15mm and 28mm figures, but I haven’t been fully into what I was trying to accomplish. I’ve tried to be inspired by music, TV and film, reading both books and comics, scoured the net for a muse, but everything leaves me cold and uninspired.
So what do you do when this kind of block occurs? Are there any more sources of new effort that I haven’t either known about before, or been unaware of? Is it time to start a new challenging project, or just hang up the hat for a while until my energy levels replenish. I’ve even thought about giving the entire thing up so I can concentrate on other stuff. It wouldn’t be the first time, there have been several breaks in the hobby throughout my life for various reasons, some long ones, some short, but to be frank, I don’t think that I will be giving up that easily this time. Even so I sound really negative about things, I’m not going to give it up, as this is something that I always come back to.
There’s not too many decent hobbies that I could do that would satisfy my artistic impulses, since a good 80-90% of everything I end up doing is craft or art based, doing other stuff that doesn’t scratch my creative urge, would just blow my mind and send me mad!
like I said, i’m not giving up, even though it sounds as if I’m a tad negative. I just want my mojo back! I just want to know what I need to do to get it back. Even though my efforts haven’t been all that bad, well at least I haven’t thought so, but this hobby block still eludes me.
I guess what I’m trying to say is what other methods do you employ to recharge your hobby batteries? How do you avoid the loosing of one’s mojo? If you know any useful suggestions, let me know! Mind you, with this new day dawning, I have the sudden urge to pick up my sculpting tools and get to it again…
Right, where’s the greenstuff….

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Reaper Miniatures Bones II Kickstarter

2 Oct

Now this KS is the one I’ve been waiting for! Yes, it’s the second Reaper Miniatures Bones 2 campaign over on Kickstarter.

Having missed out on the last one, which believe me, I’m still kicking myself about. If you don’t know, Reaper Bones miniatures are a cheaper alternative to their usual metal lines, made up from the majority of their already existing figures, just made in a soft polymer type plastic. The first KS was to expand the initial releases from a handful, to many new bones figures. So successful was the last campaign, the second one was sure to come!

Now, with this new KS, they again want to bring out lots more new figures, both big and small, but need us to help fund this task! What do you get for helping support this campaign? Oh my friends….lots and lots and lots of bones minis!!

I was pretty gutted I never got in on the last one to be honest, cash flow and  stuff gets in the way sometimes, so I ducked out, but wished I hadn’t, and I imagine lots of others did too.

So for a $100 pledge what do you get I hear you ask again? Well, take a look at this, and this is just the start, as the stretch goals get passed, they will be adding more figures to the core set, plus you can purchase add ons too. You know the score, more they raise, more goodies for those who pledge at the $100 level.

Expect the core set to expand a fair bit, they aint even at $1 million yet (the last one hit nearly $3.5 Million!) just what exactly will be added will be revealed when the goals are reached, but no doubt everyone in on this will bag plenty of nice miniatures. Yes, and before I get someone saying “You only do 15mm” etc, indeed that is true, but me and my boy do play warhammer as well, and while I love 15mm, lots of the core set will get used as nice proxies for our forces, as well as make a start on some new ones. I’m also seeing us revisit dungeoneering in 28mm (Oh my lord, what am I doing…..)

By now your guessing that I’ve backed this KS, and that is true as well, me and my kid are splitting this between us, and even so I’m a bit unsure about where I’m going to get the cash to pay for my pledge, I know that we’ll be well rewarded for what we put in. Reaper have a solid record for delivering a KS of this scale, so I’m in no doubt they’ll end up sending me a lovely parcel when everything is sorted.

Seriously, if your interested in this great KS, you should get yourself in on it, I missed out last time (I really wanted Cthulhu, but he never calls!) and realise my mistake when I saw what was up for offer. I say go for it and pledge, if you don’t have the money, go and find it, sell a kidney/grandmother/etc to raise it, you have a few weeks (well, that’s my plan anyway!)

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Warboard gaming mat Kickstarter

23 Sep

This KS nearly slipped through quietly, the Warboard from warsmith. As you can see, it’s a folding modular board made in the same way as board game boards. I like the idea personally, only I wish more were done like this for 15mm gaming (Well, you knew that I was going to say that, right?!)

It’s a bit on the pricey side, but I reckon you’d get plenty of service for your cash with these in your 28mm games. If I were a 28mm gamer, I’d be in for a few of them, sadly I’m not, but love the thought of instant scenics like this.

Check it out if you think it could be just what you need!!!
