New release: SHM52 Criat Mercenary at 15mm.co.uk

8 Feb

Cultist shown for size comparison

Well, I thought I would let you know that my first 15mm sculpt is now available in the SHM range from 15mm.co.uk! Priced at 65p each, they are a unique race for your 15mm scifi gaming, painting or collection. For those who like a little fluff background,  The Criat is a large humanoid marsupial mammal with a voracious hunger due to their hyper metabolism. They are often found in private armies employ, in return for vast quantities of food as payment for their services. In order to function normally the criat must consume several times their own body weight per day, or eventually fall into a state of hibernation until such food becomes available. Of course you are free to devise your own fluff and paint schemes for your own games, and I hope you like it!

Fancy that eh? I suppose I’m a bonafide 15mm sculptor at last! This figure was among the first ever 15mm sculpts I did, and while it won’t be to everyones taste, I know there will be some who can appreciate the cartoony and humorous nature I intended with him, and lots of the stuff I do. If there is any one out there who get some of these, please send me some pics and details of what you used them for, I really would love to see them in action in your 15mm games (or even other scales or dioramas etc)

You’ll be pleased to know that I’m working on a few different criat, armed with different weapons, poses and equipment, I’ll let you know as and when they become available.

I do really like how they are quite good for mad colour schemes, I plan a few different paintjobs for them, and it’ll be good to see them in other crazy colours by other gamers.

First Look: Finished 15mm Criat Alien Mercenary miniature

So you may recall me going on about a sculpt that I did last year being cast up. I thought that I would show you a first paint up of my new figure. Its a Criat Mercenary in 15/18mm scale for sci fi battle games.

As you can see from my scheme, I chose a blue colour rather than a natural one, just to differate it from it being realistic (with it being alien and its cartoony nature!)

So what do you think of the finished article? Please bear in mind, I hadn’t sculpted anything this small before so it’s a little rough around the edges, yeah, sure there are bits on it I could improve upon on future sculpts, but I’m pretty pleased with the overall model. It has plenty of detail for painting, and is very cute as well, I can see it appealing to fans of cartoon styles (I’m not keen on realism and love a cartoony/comic look to stuff like this)

For those of you who would like to compare him to another 15mm sci fi figure, here’s it next to a GZG  UNSC trooper for purposes of scale. It’s a deal bigger and chunkier as I had intended them, but may be I will do the next Criat figures a little less chubby! Not that I think there’s anything wrong with how it looks, I just want to get trying some other poses on the go with them if I do anymore. That will be decided by how well these little critters will be recieved by you the buying public!

These miniatures will be available from 15mm.co.uk shortly, so if you are interested in getting a Criat or two (or more?) I will let you all know when they are on general release so you can purchase them! Like I said, if these are liked enough I will expand the Criat race with more infantry choices and additional figures, but that will be only if they go down OK! I invite any constructive feedback any of you may have  regarding any ideas etc for the criat, as well as anything else you’d like to ask.

Personally, I will be using them as a unit as I intended, along with my ragtag alien pirates/mercs, maybe they will make an appearance as little gribblies in any 28mm games I might run in the future, as they would be quite cool as annoying little gobbo type fodder troops. I will be interested to see  what others use them for and what paint schemes they use when getting their own.

More little piggy sculpts and a bit of news….

20 Oct

Hello there, I have been a tad busy, so haven’t had much of a chance to post here in the last two days, but I have been quite a busy bee!!

I have another two Oggam sculpts done, the Demolitions Oggam, and an Oggam standard barer. I gave the standard a kind of Fidel Castro-esque look, as well as being a feral (I hadn’t done any thus far) The Demolitions expert is armed to the teeth with TNT, grenades and a combat knife (and a pair of shades) He’s Ok, not my better sculpt (Well, not my fave anyway)

All that I need now is a medic and another trooper (maybe a spotter with some binoculars or something)

Now, I have sculpted a little alien merc, just as a practice. It’s a kind of cat/rat humanoid thing that I have named a Criat (Taken from the Czech word for “servant” I think, rather apt for a mercenary/hired hand!)

Having just done it as a bit fun, like a sculpted doodle, I thought I might try my luck at getting it submitted to 15mm.co.uk’s SHM range. I can now proudly announce that all being well and it survives the pre moulding tests, you will be able to get your hands on the copies of my figure in the not too distant future. He has been sent over to them now and hopefully (I should think everything will be fine) you’ll be seeing it included in that range! I now can say that I’m a bonafide mini sculptor, and I’m sure that I’ll be submitting more of my “green doodles” as I have a few things I’d like to see made in shiny white metal!!

Of course I will be keeping you updated on my progress with this as soon as I know more myself. I must admit I love the idea of others getting to use stuff I designed and made on the tabletop, it’s something I think I would always get a kick out of!!

My first attempt at sculpting an Oggam in 15mm, WIP

13 Oct

Ok, let me first say this. I have never sculpted anything in this scale. Yes, I have sculpted lots of bigger things, but never something this small. I know there is a few issues with this figure, but considering I haven’t done this before. I messed up with the legs, I should have done them first, and the hands lack finesse, but with a little bit more work it will probably be ok. Please feel free to leave any constructive criticism, tips or comments that you think would help. He’s about 15mm dead on, and I’ll do a size comparison later to show it next to another 15/18mm figure. Anyway here are the photos!

So, is it worth me carrying on with sculpting this size? One thing is for sure, I need to get some proper sculpting tools (I did this with a pin and a circle compass point!)
