Wargaming Aspirations for 2015 (better late than never…)

1 Feb

It’s not often that I have the time or concentration lately to consider my gaming aspirations for the new year ahead. Still, there are shed loads of random ideas knocking around in my skull, that may or may not come to fruition in the next 12 months, one can still dream on.

I thought I’d share a few while I have a spare hour to kill at the moment, as with life, I might not get the opportunity to blog it when it’s more appropriate than this month. (Well, it’s still the beginning of the year, sort of..)

2015 is the Year of…Co-operation

I’d like to think that 2015 might be a good time to brainstorm some more complex ideas, stuff that I might find difficult to get into gear by my lonesome. Generally, at the best of times, my ideas can be a little surreal or insane, so getting others to steer me in the best direction is something I always consider. The ability to bounce ideas around with others is great, and other people’s take on stuff can be refreshing and bring a new level of detail to boost sometimes stagnant thoughts. I am a team player and while I enjoy being credited for the things I do, I think it’s just as good, if not better to get achievements working alongside others. Much more can be done, things of a higher magnitude than by oneself. There are quite a few individuals that I am thinking of as I write this, so guys, if your reading this, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Hell, I’m even up for new ideas or projects collabroratively (if it sounds good!) Let me know.

2015 is the Year of…Dungeoneering

I’d like to think that the seed of a few ideas is starting to develop. Not just with a massive modular dungeon board system, but I quite like the idea of doing a wargaming version of the old Fighting fantasy system. All fan homage of course, free as the wind to all those who want to use it. I think the system would lend itself easily to miniatures, just a few adjustments for the missing rules, I reckon with the bare bones with the best and most appropriate bits taken from the old FF RPG, and advanced FF. Throw in Out of the pit for the most of the monsters (devise new stuff for models that would need covering) and it’d be sound. Hell, I’d even attempt at some weird dungeon monsters too (sculpting wise that is) Could be fun….

2015 is the year of…Thinking out of the box

In order for me to kick myself up the ass, I’m going to need new inspiration, some mad self induced projects that will challenge myself to further my skills. I do have a number of things in mind, but these will involve planning, research and self education. Plus some cash would help for some (maybe I should stick a paypal donate button here and there…hmmm) We all need shit like this to keep dementia at bay.

2015 is the year of New Miniatures

Hopefully, looking at my stack of books containing my scribbled brainfarts detailing miniatures I’ve always planned, there are some nice ideas I have to revisit. With Grinning skull miniatures due for their next set of releases, more mad shit will need to be done. Plus, since creating a nice 15mm space orc warband with my own designs (CP Models), there are things I want to add to the 15mm choice (Bionic Trolls, Cyber Wyverns, Warg bikes, crazy orky bits etc) Loads of other things too I’d like to have a go at.

2015 is the year of…Finishing what has already begun

You know this. Getting done some stuff that needs to be finished. We all have it, and unlike ebola, it’s a resolution we could all share for the positive.

So I guess the moral to this is, will I manage it all? Well, fuck knows! I would like to think of them as directions in which to steer the USS Grimace toward. If I get half done of what I try, that’ll be ok for me. These aren’t set in stone, more like they are sculpted in plasticene, with the advantage that I can squidge over the marks and edit them.

Wargames Supply Dump get set to release the Draxxon!

31 Jan

DSCF3783

So I’m here briefly to talk about the Draxxion sculpts I sold on a while ago to Roger at Wargames Supply Dump. I’ve not had much time for the net lately, trying rather to get back on track with stuff, mostly painting and planning designs and such. Roger kindly sent me some finished castings of them to paint up, which I finally got around to (also, you read rogers blog post about them here)

If you are a regular here, you might remember the greens I made, they were ok, but as much of my stuff, they were a brain fart based on my idea. the only thing was I wasn’t entirely happy with the concept vs how they turned out, that’s why I ended up selling them on. No doubt a new and improved version of the Draxxion will emerge at some point, there are a few other ideas brewing that will come first!

The Brood leader turned out pretty good, I always liked that one, the other overseer guard was ok too. They’re also pretty big beasts compared to the 15mm-ish forces they were percieved to face. You could say that these would make good 25-28mm troops as well depending. The Draxx were always designed to be big buggers, as you would imagine being dragons at various stages of age and growth (so, thats how I’ll use them, but I’ll get into that later…)

DSCF3772

DSCF3773

Onto the smaller brood, we’ve got the scout (well, that’s my take on it) it’s still big if you compare it to 15mm stuff, but he’s a step down from the elites. He’s got a studious look to him, definite leader material, or advisor in some shape or form.

DSCF3774

Next up is the next size down, some kind of heavy, quite a oriental feel to him (the head at least) he’ll make a fine leader for a heavy weapons detachment I’m planning.

Last, are the smaller 15mm-ish brood warriors. A load of these would be great, filling in the gaps of the battle force (which I don’t have, but I do have some additions of my own for my wargaming purposes!)

As with a lot of the figures I sculpt, there are plenty of uses for these, in scales from 15mm, 20mm and more, it’s up to you! You’ll have to forgive my paintwork and my pics, with lighting being bad, it’s tricky to get the desired effect I want, plus I don’t know where my glasses are, so it makes it even harder to see (but, I’ll soldier on.)

Like I’ve mentioned, I’ll be making a Draxx warband using these, and some other stuff I have around, and these will make a good start as the command section. I’ll post the progress soon.

I hope that these figures are useful to some of you, it gives me a buzz to know that other people might collect, paint and game with any of the stuff I create from random brainfarts, and indeed any ideas my head spawns, and remember I appreciate any constructive comments pertaining to anything raised here.

I’ll be back later with more miniature and wargaming dooings (It’s about time I brought it back in line) once I have sorted a few bits and caught up with webby stuff.

ciao!

Taking inspiration from life….

9 May

Some of you may wonder why exactly I have taken upon myself to at some points, to sculpt strange chicken mutant creatures in my endeavors.

The Clukkatrix and the chukk being the examples I’m referring to (in the photos), but I do get asked just why my creations come about.

clukatrix

Simply put, the things around me influence me a lot, and in these instances I admit are inspired by my chickens. I’ve kept chooks for a few years now, and since having a flock I wish I’d done it years before. Not only are they easy to keep and maintain, but provide an essential service to myself and my clan (well, egg production)

As much as I love my cats, I think I actually prefer chooks (sorry cats!) not that my cats don’t provide usefulness around my home (they keep the woodmice getting in our house) but when your getting a box or more of free range eggs everyday (you know how much a box of large free range eggs are nowadays, anything from £1.50+) it’s hard to not admire them from their household input. I find them fascinating, and spend ages watching their behavior and nuances, each one with separate personalities, studying them more and more you see the similarities to the prehistoric, I imagine that dinosaurs were similar to them in both movement and ferocity (yes, chooks are sometimes very aggressive to each other, other animals and humans) There is indeed something extremely primordial and raw about these creatures that intrigues me, hence the miniature chicken references.

Simply put, I love my chooks.

To top things off, I’ve been incubating for the past few months with no avail, that is until yesterday. Now I have to say all the patience and constant temperature and humidity checking has paid off.

chook0004

Finally, with today’s latest arrival, that’ll be 10 in total from the 12 that were incubated, not bad me thinks! although these tiny polish bantams are no trouble to house and feed, I’m sure that things will change really rapidly and they’ll soon need loads of room and cost a kings ransom to feed!

All in all, will this lead to more mini-sculpts of chicken related mutants and madness? Probably not, but I’ve always wanted to make the Chukkasaurus Rex……

Grinning Skull Creative update, and we’ve scored 250,000+ hits…

25 Apr

genlogo1

Long time no post!! Hi everyone, just taking a break in my busy schedule to do some long overdue updates here, and I just wanted to let you know that I’ve just finally added a couple of pages to the site that are intended to show and catalogue some of the work I have done in a shameless attempt to ply my wares, which incidentally will from now on, go under the banner of Grinning Skull Creative Studios.

In the menu, you will now find a page for miniature sculpting services (which also has a small gallery of my works for you to have a browse) and another page for Wargames Terrain Services with another gallery at past and present examples of stuff.

I’ll be adding more and more new material (and old when I find it about) over time, so please do feel free to come and have a check back to see the pics. Of course let me know if you might require me to do any of the above for your own projects by contacting me via the forms on the pages, or just use the contact page to email me if you want to get in touch.

For fans of the blog, please don’t worry, I haven’t given up, just been busy getting stuff done and hoping to generate more stuff to put up on here for your entertainment, I really want to get back into focusing on the wargaming aspects of the site as well, so the creative bit gives me ample chance to get making stuff that I hope you’ll enjoy (hopefully!) Of course I’ll still be keeping it real with segments like Crowdfunding Spotlight and I have a few new ideas for regular segments that I think you’ll like as well (but I’ll tell you later…)

Again, feel free to check out the new pages as I’m sure there are quite a few new bits you probably haven’t seen, and I’ll be updating these as frequently as possible to keep things fresh!

Also thanks to everyone for visiting the site in these last couple of years, and I’m happy to let you know that we’ve now hit the 250,000 hit mark, and to me at least this feels like another milestone with the Grinning Skull. I don’t know if this is a lot, but frankly it does to me and I’m really greatful that so many of you have wanted to read my babble over this short time!! So thank you, each and everyone of you that have graced these pages and put up with me!!

Here’s to another 250,000!!!

Mini Sculpting: 28mm Ettin/2 headed troll; Fnar-frag the two faced!

6 Mar

DSCF3284

Ok, you’re going to have to forgive my net connection, it’s not great at the best of times, but like I have told you before, I promised to show you some stuff I have been working on.

This is a personal WIP for my WFB orc and gobbo army, mainly my troll mob. I must admit that trolls are my fave lot out of the orc stuff, and have scored me many victories while using them in game. The only trouble I find with them is the fact that they are so darned expensive to buy, so I spend plenty of time searching around different places for old troll figures to use as proxies, so much that I decided to add to my ranks by making some myself.

DSCF3273

I thought I’d make him of the two headed variety, after rewatching “Troll Hunter” I thought it would stand out more than the usual type, and that he’d serve best for part of my command section of my two units. First thing you might notice is the weird positioning of his hand. This is for a reason, I wanted him to be holding a goblin marionette puppet on strings. However that still might change if I decide otherwise, but for now thats the plan.

DSCF3280

DSCF3281

Also I wanted him to exhibit a left/right personality, sort of good cop/bad cop, so that’s why the puppet holding side has a goofy, child like  essence to it, while the other is more “business” orientated and ready for some pagga!

DSCF3282

Also, I wanted his gait to reflect that being a troll, he really needed to be quite deformed and twisted, especially with having the two headed mutation, so the slight twist in his stride is intentional. I wanted him to match the other trolls I have, so he needed plenty of warty scales, which will highlight nicely when painted in contrasting colour, oh yeah, and popeye type fore arms too!

I think it’s great the fact that GW old school trolls have the definitive cartoon look to them, which I needed to try and match, especially with him being more of a character figure than the usual rank and file troll. Lots of you might know that I sometimes diss GW, but it also matches my own style of modelling in a cartoon look, and seeing as though it’s going to be used for oldhammer and 6th Ed WFB, I don’t see the problem. Before anyone mentions the base, he’s now glued onto a 40×40 monster sized base with gluegun glue, just because it is a quick and easy way of adding a durable texture instead of sculpting it on, oh the many uses of the humble gluegun!!

I really want to release my own range of 28mm trolls and troll kin in the future hopefully, maybe a KS (ok, so don’t moan about crowdfunding, I actually think stuff like Kickstarter is a fine idea and many out there are a bit sick of the whole thing, but it does serve a purpose) I have quite a few ideas for several different types of troll races that would fit nicely into the O&G army lists, as proxies for the various troop types rather than the regular Orcs and their ilk.

Next up will be a decent paint job once I finsih the puppet goblin, or war yoyo, or even a human casualty (still not 100% on what to do) but I’ll show you once the next bit has been done.

Next up, is my Oggam settlement board (once my connection will allow more uploads)

Tally ho miniature chums!
