Zomtober 2013: Grinning Skull gets ready to share in Zomtober madness!

6 Oct

So, I’m taking part in the Zomtober festivities (see more details on Zomtober here  and here) In which all participants must paint up at least one survivor or zombie figure per week during the month. Whilst I think most of us taking part will be 28mm zombie gamers, for myself at least in our house, the apocolypse is firmly in the 15mm size!

To continue with my HO zombie hordes, I’d like to present my Zomtober entry, even bigger swarms of the dead!

As you can see, these swarm bases are made up from the very versatile model railway civilian figures in 1/87, easily available from ebay or model railway suppliers. (check out more HO hordes) There’s a “funny” story attached to me finishing these critters off, which involves my wife throwing away all of my basing materials (you know, static grasses, flocks, gravel, lichen etc etc) so I am a bit limited to basing options here! That is until she’s spent quite a bit of cash replacing all what she’s accidentally thrown out!

I’ll be using the larger horde bases to represent big fast moving deadlier swarms during gameplay, that’s why I only did three, which is more than enough, as now my undead horde for 15mm is extremely large, with loads more I haven’t even started yet (including the really nifty Old Glory pack I picked up a bit ago, what I will be painting next for next weeks zomtober entry!)

Don’t forget to visit our other good zombie wargaming bloggers too this zomtober! Take a trip over to their wonderful blogs to see what they are up to this month and check out their entries. Full list of participants in the months zomtober fun are:

15mm Zombies: The HOrdes. HO scale infected!

18 Apr

I decided to follow the idea’s over on TMP, here and here , and on the blog: Welcome to lazarus  with the creation of horde bases using HO scale model railway civilian figures. Armed with the idea, I went off on my travels to find some on line.

I managed to bag a set of 100 direct from china, I figured that it was better to get the prepainted versions instead of the unpainted lot, since they’d be easier and quicker to paint up and sort (plus getting 100 figures painted fast with the time I have is near on an impossible feat at the moment!) All in all I got them for £3.49 ($5.32 US) and it took 10 days to get from the other side of china to the UK! I love the internet for that, 20 years ago that kind of thing would have been impossible to think you’d be able to do that, but I guess the 21st century is pretty sci-fi in lots of ways!

So, within minutes of getting the package through the door, I was busy sticking them onto 2p pieces as lovely little zombie swarms. They stuck firm with a little superglue and once this was done, all I needed to do was wash them in a few washes of browns, blacks and reds. I didn’t want to spend much time making them pretty, a faceless, ragged and dirty mob of the hordes of the dead is what was needed and they looked fine!

I ended up getting 98 of them used (including some of the seated figures used as a small 1p sized swarm as a few zombies munching on a body!) and they look really good. I recommend if you need a load of cheap zombies, this my friends is the way to do it. The only reservation is that these are scaled at 1/100, true 15mm as I believe. Most of my other zombies are a slight bit bigger, but I can cope with that, from a distance and from a gaming perspective, these are minor things I’m willing to overlook in return for additional zombie troops for my zombie gaming.

Next time i’ll spend a little more time prepping them before I get around to sticking them to the bases, as they tend to have round mould marks on them a lot, but like I said, these are really just a quick and easy test project to see how good they are before buying more, so that I shall bare in mind for the next time. (Plus from a few foot away, you cant see that kind of thing, and they aren’t the prettiest of figures with hardly much detail!) I will say that it’s true that these little plastic figures being ideal for other uses like angry protest mob (which I will be doing next, I need them for scenarios at the start of the infection, with civil unrest and riots etc for my riot cops to beat up!)

If you need some quick and easy hordes of flesheaters for your game, honestly this is a really good plan! Well done to all the HO scale zombie pioneers before me for their ingenuity and savvy wargaming sense!

Peace out…..

Survivors ahoy! Pendraken 10mm sci-fi civilians

28 Feb

I thought I’d share with you my last entry to the Pendraken painting comp 2013. This lot are from their sci-fi range, Male sci-fi civilians and female civilians. They turned out ok and don’t have a cat in hell’s chance of winning I don’t think, but regardless of the comp the reason I got them was ready for the release of their 10mm modern zombie range coming soon (which I will be getting you can be sure!)

While there aren’t too many armed ones in the mix, they are fine for modern survivor types that one would need in a 10mm apocolypse. My plan is to run a long campaign in both 10mm and 15mm. With that in mind I need to replicate key models and scenery from 15mm in 10mm. What is handy is that Model railway N scale is pretty much a good match for 10mm, so it should be relatively easy to find the same sized modern stuff I need (plus I use a lot of card scenics, so a bit of jiggling the print out, I can match all of the cardstock layout like for like) N scale is pretty popular so there are lots of cars, buses, tiny bits of details and cool things I can add to the mix, I love it all and intend to use it so the 10mm games where I get the chance to pit zombies vs government forces. I can even do airport based games like in the movies and computer games as there are lots of 1/144 options for 747s and aircraft.

It will be sweeet!!!!

The main survivors in my 15mm lot will also need proxies, so that’s what is going to be a pain, but a bit of imagination and innovation I reckon i’ll suss it out.

As you can see, here’s what I have so far, I have a male armed civvy in a baseball cap, a civilian female and a mixed group of fleeing folks, they will do for scenarios like evacuations, riots, rescues and a whole host of other stuff where panicking bods are needed.

The single based ones are to represent my main survivors, or my cast so to speak.

So, as you can see, this is Beth 10mm, and Beth 15mm, She is a main player in the campaign. Beth is a tough cookie, before the event, she was a reporter for the Herald. She has seen her share of danger, betrayal and death since it happened, but has managed to keep some humanity for others in her situation. The learning curve was steep, but now she kicks ass.

This is  Joe (10mm little Joe & 15mm big Joe!), Joe used to drive his truck for a local logging company before the event. He had his issues with his boss, his on off girlfriend, and his heavy drinking. When the undead took all that away from him, having to decapitate his girl lead him to give up the booze and not waste what was left of his life. Joe still has his truck and is a sureshot with his double barreled shotgun. He used to love hunting at the weekend with his buddies, nowadays he still hunts but with things as they are, it could be his buddies he ends up hunting…..

So you get the idea, my plan is to get my main 15mm survivors with their little versions. Hopefully Leon and Dave have some good matches planned for their 10mm survivors, and hopefully some existing ones in their ranges now that should fit for what I need. It’s going to be a challenge, but will be great fun getting the chance to keep the campaign interesting to fit a whole heap of new gaming options into it that I would have problems with doing in 15mm.

More civvies to come and a few more 10 & 15mm characters. Even Joe’s truck comes in two sizes….

Peace out surivors…..
