Grinning Skull Miniatures release: The Oggborg

19 May

Another week, another Grinning Skull release over at Alternative Armies! This time we’ve got the oggborg and oggbot, enhanced cybered up oggum war vets.

Oggborgs (also known as Cybogs) are battle worn veterans of serious conflict. When an Oggum trooper survives greivous injury, they are sometimes fixed and augmented with crude cybernetic technology of Oggum design.
Although this surgery is mostly voluntary, it’s usually forced upon the wounded by their warlord’s unwillingness to let their favourite lackeys from leaving his retinue.
Once an Oggum undergoes such an experiment, most will experience severe psycological changes, even possibly suffering partial or full lobotomisation in the process. Usually these subjects are then reprogrammed soley for battle, wiping out their previous personality for good.
An Ogbot is such an oggborg who has undergone so much cybernetic enhancement that all remenants of their previous life has gone, and are now little more than a machine with a few organic parts, but it is not uncommon for ogbots to have full concious thought if a fresh undamaged brain was first transplanted into a suitable host machine.
Still, not all conversions serve so willingly, and many will resist against control software to enjoy a semi normal existence. Those who have become so mentally damaged may reject everything and turn to the life of a wanderer and all the trappings of freedom. These might find the employ of other warlords, pirates and mercenaries or other groups of outcasts, so an oggborg may be found anywhere in alliance with anyone.
This technology is widely used by most factions, such as the Santyr cult of the Iron legion, or the mighty Og-mech of the golden Imperialists. Even the Okvan scholars and scientists create their brainwashed minions using this tech. The Scrofa tend to shun such things as is not natural, but even oggborg renegades and converts can be found in their number.
Even with the erratic malfunctions and glitches inherent in oggum technology, these grizzled warriors are legendry in combat, and should be engaged in battle with great caution.

These little bleeders are fun minis, I’m sure there’s plenty of games they’ll fit into, if not just oggum! These figures are available now from Alternative Armies, as is the rest of the Grinning Skull Miniature range, along with this months other new releases, like the Kize and the Oggra!

Miniature Design: Thoughts on the Oggam Militia

3 Aug

The time has come for me to start to think about some more additions to the Oggam, mainly for ideas pertaining to more Empire of Og troops. Sure, I know that there are plenty of light infantry troopers, but with quite a few people asking about how suitable the oggam would be for Duke Nukem style games, I thought I might as well investigate this for myself.

I did play the game many years ago (on the PC or playstation, I don’t remember too much about it) and vaguely remember bits, but folks keep telling me about the Pig cops etc. While I don’t want to infringe on anyones IP or design, to further flesh out the empire troops, I had written into the background (provisionally of course) that of the Guild of eternal happiness, which is the empire’s own law enforcers and secret police. Given that I am working on the notes/draft of the WAR PIGS ruleset to accompany the figures as well, now is as good a time as any to give a bit of thought to their design and function both in background and mini form, that way I can maybe please some of the gamers interested in a Pig cop type, and fill in some more detail.

For you who don’t know what I’m going on about, Duke Nukem Pig Cops actually aren’t that far removed from an Oggam in design, which is why all the questions I suppose. Let me show you.

Duke Nukem pigcop

As you can see, he looks like a Feral oggam (wild boar type) wearing a stereotypical action movie SWAT kind of cop outfit and gear, he’s quite a ringer for an Og don’t you think? Please for one moment think that these designs ever had any bearing on my concept for the oggam, it’s not until after I was drawn attention to them that this similarity was realised, the real inspiration was taken from the old french black and white pathe film “Le couchon Danseur” (the dancing pig) which is an old music hall act that features a performer in a pig bodysuit. Its one of the creepiest things I have seen (creepy in a cool way of course) Check it out:

As you can see, that film, coupled with the tried an tested generic orc, served me well inspiration wise, big creepy comical pigs!

Back to the Guild Militia, The Guild of eternal happiness is a sect of Oggam within the Empire of Og that is charged with the everyday policing of their peers within empire territories. While the Guild operates at the level of standard policing, they also act as the secret and intelligence service for the empire and include spies, assassins, enforcers and other similar types. While I’m not going to focus on the specialists in the guild yet, I really want to get some of the more standard “cops” fleshed out before I work on the rest. I have some concrete designs and ideas for them, its just the standard militia types I need to decide upon first.

My easiest route would be to carbon copy the pig cop design, but I don’t think that I would be happy with just doing that, besides the pig cop design is not as podgy as how I imagine them to be, the legs and waist are far too small and thin. Another thing would be to make them more like a snort than a feral, which will add more girth to them.

Another point I want to bring up, is that in no way am I poking fun at any actual police with the “pig” connection. The entire premise for the oggam is that based as much as I can on bad cliches around anything to do with pigs. Even down to the dwellings which the oggam reside, are too based upon the story “the three little pigs” with the preference to building with straw, wood and brick, now is standard to how the oggam create the sounder (Oggam roundhouses) Please let me know of any pig related cliches if I have missed any!

While most aspects of the pig cop I like and would like to assimilate into my design, its more likely that just one figure out of the entire set of standard militia will have some resemblance to  the DN pig cop, I’m in the UK, so I’d like to give them a more british feel to the standard uniform (while keeping the flak vest) including both a similar looking UK style helmet, and peaked cap (which will fit for those folks out there wishing for a more universal feel) I think it’s essential for the Militia to have a strong visual element like a bobbies helmet with the fact that the miniatures are at 15mm, that way they are more easily distinguished between in oggam based games, that way they will have a distinct look. Oggam tend to look similar to each other if your a casual observer, and for a designer it gets hard to create a different looking og in this scale, so it was always my intention to use the “hat system” of design for them!

For those who want to know what the hat system is, well this is the design system of getting a generic starting point (In my case, an Oggam) and giving it a hat, that way you change the entire aspect of the generic form. For example, an oggam given a top hat like in the film, will suddenly take on the form of a well to do gentleman, while add a viking helmet, he becomes a marauder, and so on! Add on another detail to match the hat, and bobs your uncle, you take one standard design to a specialised form. It works with anything, orcs, goblins, humans etc etc ad infinitum.

The whole hat system from the police helmet gives rise to further adaptions on the same theme, like motor hog militia, riot militia and so on. Although any final decisions have yet to be made, I welcome any suggestions, thoughts or snippets of webby goodness that might help in the inception of the militia’s design, please let me know!

I must be off now to work on the oggam terrain I am making. These prototype designs of building styles will feature heavily in the campaign rules of WAR PIGS, but more of that later…..

Peace out….

So, what’s what in the new Grinning Skull range? (Part 1)

So, I guess I’d better put a bit more meat on the bone for those of you who are interested in what figures are in the new Grinning Skull range. What exactly are each of the miniatures and what’s their background?

Therefore I will reveal to you a little more information about each of them and help colour in a bit of background about them! I know that folks will like to work these figures into their own games and settings, but I’d like to share with you where I was coming from in creating these figures.

The Grinning Skull Miniature range can be found at 15mm.co.uk

grn01_300dpi

Ok, lets start with GRN01:  The Mutant Reptiloid soldier.

These troopers are big fellers, a nice heavy trooper while not really meant for their swiftness, I had envisioned squad after squad in some Draxxion Khatoika war clan (The Draxxion are many races of sentient saurians all of which are decended from their ruling elites dragons and their close kin) The Reptiloid being a stock type of warrior, with a this kind of mutant two headed reptiloid having either coming from one of the Draxx homeworlds that has ancestry of some hydra dragon lord, or vat grown to maturity for the purpose of war (or egg grown, however you prefer) I’ll sure be adding other reptiloids and Draxxion in the future, so look out for them.

GRN02: Kize Soldier.

Now, the Kize are a race of psionic/telepathic worm humanoids with a single eye. Distantly related to the Oggam home world’s native Stingworm (which start life as an intestinal parasytic worm, before being defecated out and raised as a warbeast), the Kize will infest a world with just a few individuals and set to releasing their microscopic young into a water supply. These in turn grow inside an unknowing host who ingest them, and gradually hatch out and invasion begins. Eventually I’ll be sculpting some more Kize troopers, with other types and a few gribbly bits like monsters and vehicles possibly.

GRN03: Pliiim Adventurer.

Pliiim are a race I created a long time ago for the Spacemaster ICE game campaign we used to play, but then was transplanted to my Universal Carnage Scifi game from wayback. I thought that they should feature as a cameo in my range at least, but who knows, if folks like him, I’ll no doubt do some more Pliiim figures (heavy weapons, troopers and tech)

grn04_300dpi

GRN04: Oggam Pigdog.

These creatures are a strange breed of mutant pig on the homeworld. Used by most Oggam as guard dogs, pets, hunting beasts and all manner of tasks and jobs. They are most prized if one can find a pigdog with a nose for truffles. Scrofa Truffle hunters and miners always have one or more trained pigdogs for this task. (Oggam do love the truffles…)

grn05_300dpi

GRN05; League of Anthracks standard barer.

As you may know about the League of Anthracks, these are the nasty, death god worshipping Ogs, fanatical war priests and zealots. Heres the battle brother standard barer. I love his face, he’s got a big cheeky grin that just cracks me up! (I know I sculpted him, and it could be seen like me laughing at my own jokes etc. but, I love it!)

grn06_300dpiGRN06: Oggam Mechanic.

Another cheeky faced one! The Og Empire  has vast resources invested in the Mechanog war machine. These maintain and create the heavy support for the entire empire, from bikes, to tanks and armoured vehicles, and the mighty Ogmech. It was fitting that they would need some field mechanics to accompany the empire squads (who knows what equipment a warband would find on the battlefield?) These guys fit that role. There will be more Mechanog stuff later, still busy on the Scrofa and okvans for now!

grn07_300dpi

GRN07: Oggam Light Infantry Trooper #1

This was the first Oggam to come to being, a commission piece from Richard “Spacecow” Smith, he’s a lovely little model. He’s got that great piggy face that goes fantastic with the other Ogs. The Light Infantry are intended for the Empire of Og, but they will work well in the other factions too!

grn08_300dpi

GRN08: Oggam Light Infantry Trooper #2.

It was my intention to arm the Ogs in the light infantry, with different stuff, so this little guy has a pistol. He’s got a really creepy face I think, but giant ogre sized pig mutants would be creepy, don’t you think!!

grn09_300dpi

GRN09; Oggam light Infantry standard.

If the LOA have big bold battle standards, so must the empire! Empire troops are well drilled and patriotic chaps all in all, so the role of the standard barer is an important one, and I wanted him to look the part. He’s got a south american revolutionary look to him,  so I imagine he’d do fine as a Notocheros freedom fighter too (I’ll get round to doing them I promise, when I get lots of others ticked off my list!)

grn10_300dpi

GRN10: League of Anthracks Battle Brother #1.

This LOA battle brother is quite a serious faced og, he really means business! I think by the moment I sculpted this one, I finally worked out the pattern of how to scupt an Oggams face. A little variation from figure to figure provides a huge range of expressions, which is where the unique selling point of the range is, its something you can see looking down on the battlefield for gaming. Yes they are cartoony, but they are supposed to be!

grn11_300dpi

GRN11: League of Anthracks Okvan Storm trooper.

The Okvans are part of the LOA and reside on a large country to the south west of the main continent. Their land is harsh and dangerous, filled with poison and polluted air, swamps and savage creatures. Okvan Stormtroopers are well equipped to deal with these awful climes with heavy enviromental resistant suits. The troopers are elites among the Okvan hordes and can be found with other LOA troops where ever they are. Some legends even say they have elaborate blood drinking rites when they celebrate the full moons…..

grn12_300dpi

GRN12: Scrofa Tribe Hero.

As you might know, the Scrofa are the wild, mad max oggam tribes, and even so he’s the only Scrofa miniature in this release, the scrofa will be found in the armies of most factions to some degree. They aren’t fussy in who they tend to hang with so often will be in retinues of Og Empire warlords, guides, trackers and scouts, Truffle hunters and miners etc. The Scrofa are in line at the moment with me modelling a set of Hoggit gangers, so those who fancy getting a Scrofa warband won’t be dissapointed (There are some already done, but can’t tell you a release date for them yet, but I’ll let you know when they are!)

TO BE CONTINUED……
