Grinning Skull Miniatures: My growing Oggam warhosts…

20 Aug

DSCF2728 Although the title of this post, does sound a bit like some kind of medical condition, I can assure you even so my Oggams have been growing, I’m not in any pain!! Seriously though (Well, not too serious…) I just wanted to show you my warbands being prepared for some WAR PIGS playtesting, I still have a fair bit of painting, terrain making and writing left to do, but at least things are starting to come together slowly with the whole thing. In between sculpting new stuff, back logs of miniatures in my painting queue and so forth, the ideas continue to flow regarding the famous mutant pig ogres and the game universe of all things Grinning Skull, otherwise known as the “Carnage Continuum”, the messed up place born from my head!! I would show you here my latest creations in green, such as the now finished “Clukkatrix” and the treacherous canine Volpurgi troopers, but I forgot to take some photos in my haste for getting away this week! I do promise to get the pics up next week, along with some fluff concerning the whole Okvan Chukk and their oggam masters. (And some about the role of the Volpurgi and how they fit in…) Anyway, on to the real business. Above you can see two units of my League of Anthracks battle brothers and fire support from an accompanying Firrog Tor fire warrior. It’s highly likely that they will be joined by a couple more units of armoured brothers, and and an elite unit of heavy Okvan Stormtroopers too. I’m planning on some support from a Stank (Oggam sewage firing armoured vehicle) and a Trog troop transport, but that’ll be later. Anywhoo, here’s a few pics. DSCF2720 DSCF2721 DSCF2722 DSCF2725 DSCF2727 As for my opposing side from the Empire of Og, up to press I have two units of oggam light infantry done (well, there’s a unit away on photo duties elsewhere…) but, they do have vehicle support from a finished converted APC, complete with custom sculpted tank commander. I have a Trog transporter on the go as well, but that aint finished yet (you can see the undercoated vehicle in the pic) these dudes even have a allied Scrofa Truffle miner and his loyal pigdog in tow, hired to root out precious fungi for the boss! DSCF2332 DSCF2229  DSCF2231 DSCF2232 You might have noticed in the background of the first pic, some strange looking buildings, these are prototype designs for styles of oggam architecture which will be playing a big part of the WAR PIGS campaign rules, more about them later as I’m still working on a lot of designs and types. As you know all the standard figures used are from my Grinning Skull range available from 15mm.co.uk if you fancy getting some for yourself! Ciao!

Miniature Design: Thoughts on the Oggam Militia

3 Aug

The time has come for me to start to think about some more additions to the Oggam, mainly for ideas pertaining to more Empire of Og troops. Sure, I know that there are plenty of light infantry troopers, but with quite a few people asking about how suitable the oggam would be for Duke Nukem style games, I thought I might as well investigate this for myself.

I did play the game many years ago (on the PC or playstation, I don’t remember too much about it) and vaguely remember bits, but folks keep telling me about the Pig cops etc. While I don’t want to infringe on anyones IP or design, to further flesh out the empire troops, I had written into the background (provisionally of course) that of the Guild of eternal happiness, which is the empire’s own law enforcers and secret police. Given that I am working on the notes/draft of the WAR PIGS ruleset to accompany the figures as well, now is as good a time as any to give a bit of thought to their design and function both in background and mini form, that way I can maybe please some of the gamers interested in a Pig cop type, and fill in some more detail.

For you who don’t know what I’m going on about, Duke Nukem Pig Cops actually aren’t that far removed from an Oggam in design, which is why all the questions I suppose. Let me show you.

Duke Nukem pigcop

As you can see, he looks like a Feral oggam (wild boar type) wearing a stereotypical action movie SWAT kind of cop outfit and gear, he’s quite a ringer for an Og don’t you think? Please for one moment think that these designs ever had any bearing on my concept for the oggam, it’s not until after I was drawn attention to them that this similarity was realised, the real inspiration was taken from the old french black and white pathe film “Le couchon Danseur” (the dancing pig) which is an old music hall act that features a performer in a pig bodysuit. Its one of the creepiest things I have seen (creepy in a cool way of course) Check it out:

As you can see, that film, coupled with the tried an tested generic orc, served me well inspiration wise, big creepy comical pigs!

Back to the Guild Militia, The Guild of eternal happiness is a sect of Oggam within the Empire of Og that is charged with the everyday policing of their peers within empire territories. While the Guild operates at the level of standard policing, they also act as the secret and intelligence service for the empire and include spies, assassins, enforcers and other similar types. While I’m not going to focus on the specialists in the guild yet, I really want to get some of the more standard “cops” fleshed out before I work on the rest. I have some concrete designs and ideas for them, its just the standard militia types I need to decide upon first.

My easiest route would be to carbon copy the pig cop design, but I don’t think that I would be happy with just doing that, besides the pig cop design is not as podgy as how I imagine them to be, the legs and waist are far too small and thin. Another thing would be to make them more like a snort than a feral, which will add more girth to them.

Another point I want to bring up, is that in no way am I poking fun at any actual police with the “pig” connection. The entire premise for the oggam is that based as much as I can on bad cliches around anything to do with pigs. Even down to the dwellings which the oggam reside, are too based upon the story “the three little pigs” with the preference to building with straw, wood and brick, now is standard to how the oggam create the sounder (Oggam roundhouses) Please let me know of any pig related cliches if I have missed any!

While most aspects of the pig cop I like and would like to assimilate into my design, its more likely that just one figure out of the entire set of standard militia will have some resemblance to  the DN pig cop, I’m in the UK, so I’d like to give them a more british feel to the standard uniform (while keeping the flak vest) including both a similar looking UK style helmet, and peaked cap (which will fit for those folks out there wishing for a more universal feel) I think it’s essential for the Militia to have a strong visual element like a bobbies helmet with the fact that the miniatures are at 15mm, that way they are more easily distinguished between in oggam based games, that way they will have a distinct look. Oggam tend to look similar to each other if your a casual observer, and for a designer it gets hard to create a different looking og in this scale, so it was always my intention to use the “hat system” of design for them!

For those who want to know what the hat system is, well this is the design system of getting a generic starting point (In my case, an Oggam) and giving it a hat, that way you change the entire aspect of the generic form. For example, an oggam given a top hat like in the film, will suddenly take on the form of a well to do gentleman, while add a viking helmet, he becomes a marauder, and so on! Add on another detail to match the hat, and bobs your uncle, you take one standard design to a specialised form. It works with anything, orcs, goblins, humans etc etc ad infinitum.

The whole hat system from the police helmet gives rise to further adaptions on the same theme, like motor hog militia, riot militia and so on. Although any final decisions have yet to be made, I welcome any suggestions, thoughts or snippets of webby goodness that might help in the inception of the militia’s design, please let me know!

I must be off now to work on the oggam terrain I am making. These prototype designs of building styles will feature heavily in the campaign rules of WAR PIGS, but more of that later…..

Peace out….

OGGAM FACTIONS: THE GLORIOUS GOLDEN EMPIRE OF OG

30 Sep

So finally I can get the background of the Oggam factions down. I regret this hasn’t been sooner but sometimes real life gets in the way! This presented here is a shortened version of the faction backgrounds, while the last part of the updated PDF, will go into more detail about them.
Here I present to you the first in a series of Oggam faction backgrounds to complement the forthcoming “Oggam War Pig Infantry” 15mm miniatures.

THE GLORIOUS GOLDEN EMPIRE OF OG

When the first kin started the revolt against their masters several centuries ago, the revolution was led by the first born kin, namely Anthracks, Scrofa, Ugg, and Ogi, the strongest and most intelligent Oggam born to the program. Anthracks, the most aggressive and violent, Scrofa, cunning and untamed, Ugg, the practical and vigilant one, while Ogi had the inventive and clever. There were others in this circle, Toch, Rasu, Clem and Okk to name a few, but the first four organised the rebellion as revenge to the keeper and his people in retaliation for their attempts of betrayal in trying to erase the secret experiments, and hide it from the authorities.
After the humans were killed and the warring had ended, the first kin parted their own ways along with their followers, into a new world they would have to forge themselves.

THE FIRST EMPIRE

Ogi, had great vision for an Oggam, probably the best for all those Oggam in those days, and took his people to the main administration sector complex of the planet and started from scratch, he had long studied the strange and complex machines of the keeper and thought it best to take shelter amongst the ruined buildings to make them their own. Having been taught to read, write and other skills, gave him much to pass on to his kin for the continued survival now the keeper was gone. Luck was in the favour of these first Oggam, and what resources had been left behind, Ogi and his people were able to survive the first few harsh years, due to the vast dried food stores held under the complex, and the food algae replicators used for deep space travel. After many years of successful living, Ogi was hailed as a hero and crowned emperor and king. This he held for many years, loved by the swelling population, basically educated from old earth knowledge, and taught to be productive.
He was venerated to almost godhood by his followers by the time he died. This tradition is still continued by the fore barer’s, although with scarce recorded data kept only by the elite of the faction, he is held in legend and lore and portrayed as a giant morbidly obese golden pig, serene and buddha like in statues and art. While his rule was kind and benevolent to the Oggam, the empire of today is a totally different place.

TODAY’S EMPIRE

The empire that exists now is far removed from the vision of Ogi. Years of good living, overly productive breeding and expansion, has caused on more than one occasion to create war and unrest within their society. When Ogi died, they were lost, electing leader after leader to take them forward. Without direction, the Oggam began to change the system, introducing new laws, different ideas and rules each time an emperor was ordained. Sections of the community waged secret and underhand ways to gain control of the empire, leading to a tradition of assassinations and murder. As a result, the title of Emperor is a job that changes frequently as the machinations of the golden council members play out, intregue and corruption for control mean the Emperor is not a career choice that lasts long….
This does not seem to put potential candidates off wanting to become supreme leader and the bad karma that goes with the job is almost treated like a usual occupational hazard!

THE FORCES OF WAR

Oggam belonging to this faction are distinguished from other sides by many cultural differences than the others. Firstly they are made up from a majority of snorts and blanders, the snorts are the politicians, community and battle leaders, due to their size and heft and supported by a large proportion of Blanders, filling the roles of technicians, learned types and intellectuals, few Blanders get the chance to fulfill the ambition of supreme leadership, but many emperors previous have been of the breed, with skill, cunning and resourcefulness key traits admired by the empire and its citizens.
Since the start of the great wars of Ungalatees and Styx  against the League of Anthracks, the Empire has become concerned with the greater good of all Oggam, awaiting the second coming of Og(i) to lead them to the coming together of the peoples of Oggam. The great wars gave the empire a reason to stop the fighting between themselves and go forth in force to combat “The Enemy” (Basically anyone who would differ in opinion from the Og philosophy) With many past generals, experts in the art of war and battle, it has left a great tradition of military organisation and the faction is probably the most ordered force on the planet. Pecking order is important, so a good soldier learns to know how to be a master by first learning to be a slave. The Royal guard are the vanguard of the faction, well armed and armoured, drilled in weapons and combat, one day they may rise the ranks and may well become Emperor if they behave in a way that inspires the populous. Many will die on the battlefield, forgotten and lost in the endless fighting over disputed territiory. The Royal guard wear the standard green body armour and helm with a characteristic slit visor. They are respected and feared by the past achievements in war. The other main bulk of troops is made up from irregular part time troops, these Oggam live usually productive lives farming and breeding, called up to service when needed. They accompany the guard into battle, armed with basic rifles and hand weapons and little armour.
Other warrior sects exist in the empire, among them, the Imperial Golden guard take priority only second to the golden council. With polished golden armour and ornamental crested helms, they serve unquestioning to their masters, trained in many skills of war and savage warriors to boot. The guild of eternal happiness boast more deadly trained killers than the Golden guard, only they work in secret, sent to do the dirty jobs no other Oggam would dirty themselves with. The Mechanog, with their invaluable knowledge of machinery, both of Oggam manufacture and salvaged vehicles accompany every Imperial force, giving heavy artillery support and logistics for battle. Known best for thier “Longsnouts” (Oggam double barreled tanks and guns) and sometimes insane Cybog battle scarred commanders with an insatiable appitite for combat, food and seeking thrills!
While some might see the Empire as one of the most noble and organised forces of Oggam, do not be fooled. They are as savage and dangerous as the rest, especially when it comes to any foreign visitors to the world. Many stranded or lost off worlder’s who get captured venturing into the boundries of Oggam space and territory, tend to either wind up in prison work camps to toil away the rest of their lives, or simply just killed for sport or fun. Sometimes an imperial general will employ Baahl mercenary units, famed for their sharpshooting skills, or even the odd human or alien in his retinue. All non Oggam are regarded with suspicion and tend to end employment by the faction’s treacherous ways and traditions, but unlike other factions, will tolerate other races for a time without trying to eat or sacrifice them!
