If you remember these critters, I need not remind you what they are from, but for those of you unfamiliar with them let me give you heads up and some background.

Scant few images of this elusive line exist, so these are some of the best ones I could find, my apologies for posting them without proper attribution to the source, email me and I'll sort it!

These are Pure Evil Miniatures officially licensed Fighting Fantasy Miniatures. Back in the 80’s there existed a book series that ignited the imaginations of tons of young minds to the worlds of fantasy and adventure. These books were not just a story, it was an interactive foray into a dangerous realm where we were the hero, in which every choice we made changed the outcome, and for us 80’s fantasy kids, we were hooked.

The source of inspiration, The cover of Deathtrap Dungeon!

No idea if these are on general release yet, but I’d love one for my collection! If you can point me in the direction of getting one of these, let me know, and I’ll get one, put it together and stick some paint on it so you can see it in it’s glory!

Grinning Skull Miniatures: B.E.A.R.S. Greens sneak peek!

20 Oct

Here’s a quick sneak peek at some of the latest greens for Grinning Skull’s B.E.A.R.S in the range. Yes, you heard right, I’m adding teddy bears with guns to the mix. Why? Why not!?

For me, miniatures and gaming is supposed to be fun, and with so much serious stuff already out there I guess there needs to be more comic relief, so I decided to create these fun figures. Apparently, teddies are quite popular for collectors and such, so I thought I’d make some gaming versions that have a decidedly “Grinning Skull asthetic”

oiuytrdcfvhbjk

In a nutshell, The B.E.A.R.S (Bio Engineered Advanced Ranger Squad) are an artificial race of teddies, created by the great Toymaster entity for his endless amusement. Subsequently these bears went rogue and escaped from their maker to dispense justice and help throughout the Carnage Continuum to those in need. Outraged at this betrayal, the Cosmic Toymaster created their opposite (eX-T.E.D.) to hunt down and destroy his rogue children and cause chaos throughout the galaxy!

The first  eX-T.E.D. bunch are forthcoming, and will feature an array of evil versions on the theme (Led by Dr. Strangefluff and his cohorts) Hopefully if popular there will be additional bears on each side, influenced by popular tropes from all sorts of things (superhero, scifi, fantasy, cartoon and movies etc)

I’ll admit, I’ve been sidetracked lately, but I’m almost finished with this set, just got a couple more eX-T.E.D. figures to go, but I’ll show off them soon.

I’ll show more from the new bunch later, but safe to say, it’s not just teddies in the mix. Additions to the Zarglian Invaders and introducing the sentient mutant plants, the Klorzids.

As ever I welcome comments, thoughts and suggestions, let me know how you think.

I Want that F*%king Miniature!: Snookums Horrorclix

I haven’t had much opportunity to post recently, nor have I had chance to access any of my stuff to continue my articles in the Grim’s Dungeons of Doom series (Trust me, next part is coming up in the form of barrels…) So, with that in mind until normal service is resumed I’m going to be posting up some previews of stuff I’m working on and a new type of series simply called “I Want that F&%king Miniature!” detailing the weird, strange or simply cool minis out there that I just have to get hold of.

To kick it all off I want to start with this trippy mini from the Horrorclix range, Snookums.

Now, while a lot of miniature purists don’t hold the clix figures as the best due to their prepaints and bendy plastic, I’ve always thought that with a good repaint or touch up that most of the time they work out fine (mostly)

Where I am most of the access to clix figures is quite limited mainly to ebay and such, so when I saw this I just thought to myself, I just have to have it.

Rolf "paedo" Harris pops by to sketch Barney and his child cult whilst in the process of praising the dark lord Satan.

A Rolf “paedo” Harris lookalike pops by to sketch Barney and his child cult whilst in the process of praising the dark lord Satan. Shemhamforash!, Hail Barney!

Everyone knows Barney, that “loveable” purple dinosaur of TV fame, who seems to hang around with groups of brainwashed kids in his creepy Paedo-istic (Is that really a word? No, but you get the idea) style.Well, this figure takes that disturbing vibe and amplifies it by adding an evil zombiefied edge, sharp teeth and chainsaw.

When I saw this figure I thought of the possibility of getting quite a few of these and running some kind of game in a similar vein to five nights at freddies. I’m all for parody miniatures, the weirder the better in fact, even so people find figures like this limited in use, I could easily use this as a antagonist in any number of games, after all, who wouldn’t enjoy the idea of kicking the shit out of a load of Barneys over and over, and I’m sure it’d be the nearest any of us will ever get to it. Imagine the 40K fun you could have sending waves of these against your Imperial forces!!

WTF!! Bathtime will never be the same again!!!

WTF!! Bathtime with Barney will never be the same again!!!

A quick slice and swap out the chainsaw for any number of weapons for variety. I just love the weirdness of this mini! I think I’ll be trying to acquire a few of them for future use. If there are any of you out there with any going spare, feel free to drop me a line regarding doing a swap or such ever.

I’ll be back later with a Grinning Skull miniature greens preview and more 4xD babble!

Grim’s Dungeons of Doom: You’ve made your bed, now stick it in your dungeon! Making 28mm beds!

Welcome to another Dungeons of Doom article, my attempt to cover pretty much every aspect of a modular dungeon build for 28mm dungeon crawling skirmishes and RPG. Further along with the furnishings of my dungeon build, as promised I’m taking on the subject of more 28mm furniture this time in the form of beds. Every mini dungeon should have some, don’t you think? it can easily set you back a fair few quid buying metal or resin versions, so why not just make some? These are easy compared to other stuff you might come to make for a project like this, so lets get cracking!

DSCF5539

The build starts with our friend, the humble lollystick. As you can see above, I cut two pieces for the single bed, and three for a double version (just in case any of the dungeon denziens ever want to get jiggy!) Affix the pieces together to form the base. I used contact adhesive, but you could do as the tables tutorial, with a piece of card underneath if you prefer (whatever works for what materials you have) Measure if you want, I usually do as much as I can by eye, as I am lazy!

DSCF5540

Next, cut a further two pieces that’ll form the head and foot boards. (They should be slightly smaller than the width of the bed frame) Glue them on.

DSCF5541

Take some thin skewer type sticks and cut four lengths per bed to form the legs. Glue them on. Also don’t worry too much about how they sit flat, you can trim them later when everything is dry.

DSCF5542

DSCF5546

On the single, I added a small piece of EVA foam to simulate a mattress, and a small square for a pillow. (So that it’d bulk out the next bit.)

DSCF5543

The Double bed skipped this step and I added a thick blanket instead. This blanket was made from some scraps of material taken from an old ripped sock (A clean one, not a smelly old one!) Most people I’ve seen doing similar beds have used toilet paper, but I opted for real material so I could capture some detail in the weave. The material was saturated in neat PVA before adding. Add more PVA if required to tidy up the scrawny edges. Leave to dry.

DSCF5547

On the single I added a blanket in the same way using the material in PVA. Make it form creases by manipulating the piece as it starts to dry.

DSCF5544

DSCF5548

Form pillows by taking small rolled up scraps of the same material and adding PVA. Material soaked in white glue will be pliable and soft, so to some degree can be shaped, so go ahead and add your stuff, blankets and coverings and be as creative as you like.

DSCF5550

DSCF5549

When the PVA has mostly dried, to achieve a proper resin feel hardness, I used really thin, cheap superglue to plasticise the pieces, by allowing it to absorb into the PVA cloth. you’ll notice a strange chemical reaction between the glues, but don’t worry, this way will achieve a rock hard finish to the cloth. Who ever said cheap superglue was no good for anything?

DSCF5551

DSCF5552

Once dried, glue them onto a piece of card for basing, leave them to dry before cutting them out to your desired base sizes.

DSCF5554

Undercoat black in your preferred method (or whichever undercoating style you usually use) then proceed to paint up as you would any other miniature or model.

DSCF5571

DSCF5574

I opted for a dirty scruffy sort, since these beds were destined for use in my dungeon, it made sense they were not clean and tidy (although, if yours are going in a castle or tavern type place, then you could make them as neat as you like) I also paid homage to the beds in Minecraft by making the single one red (since my kids play the hell out of it, it made sense since they’d be playing in the dungeon games too)

That’s all there is to it. Easy. You can elaborate as much as you’d like on the design, add a bigger headboard, chunkier legs, different material used will give a different effect with the textures etc.

Next time, I’ll be back with adventures in expanding foam, to show you how I make modular cavern walls….

Grinning Skull Miniatures release: The Oggborg

19 May

Another week, another Grinning Skull release over at Alternative Armies! This time we’ve got the oggborg and oggbot, enhanced cybered up oggum war vets.

Oggborgs (also known as Cybogs) are battle worn veterans of serious conflict. When an Oggum trooper survives greivous injury, they are sometimes fixed and augmented with crude cybernetic technology of Oggum design.
Although this surgery is mostly voluntary, it’s usually forced upon the wounded by their warlord’s unwillingness to let their favourite lackeys from leaving his retinue.
Once an Oggum undergoes such an experiment, most will experience severe psycological changes, even possibly suffering partial or full lobotomisation in the process. Usually these subjects are then reprogrammed soley for battle, wiping out their previous personality for good.
An Ogbot is such an oggborg who has undergone so much cybernetic enhancement that all remenants of their previous life has gone, and are now little more than a machine with a few organic parts, but it is not uncommon for ogbots to have full concious thought if a fresh undamaged brain was first transplanted into a suitable host machine.
Still, not all conversions serve so willingly, and many will resist against control software to enjoy a semi normal existence. Those who have become so mentally damaged may reject everything and turn to the life of a wanderer and all the trappings of freedom. These might find the employ of other warlords, pirates and mercenaries or other groups of outcasts, so an oggborg may be found anywhere in alliance with anyone.
This technology is widely used by most factions, such as the Santyr cult of the Iron legion, or the mighty Og-mech of the golden Imperialists. Even the Okvan scholars and scientists create their brainwashed minions using this tech. The Scrofa tend to shun such things as is not natural, but even oggborg renegades and converts can be found in their number.
Even with the erratic malfunctions and glitches inherent in oggum technology, these grizzled warriors are legendry in combat, and should be engaged in battle with great caution.

These little bleeders are fun minis, I’m sure there’s plenty of games they’ll fit into, if not just oggum! These figures are available now from Alternative Armies, as is the rest of the Grinning Skull Miniature range, along with this months other new releases, like the Kize and the Oggra!
