Thanks Mickey!! I’ve seen this a ton of times today, and I will probably gorge on it more over the next few weeks. JJ Abrams, we thank you.

The Star Wars-Games Workshop Mashup? Is there any truth to the rumour?

4 Feb

gwSW

If you haven’t been living in a cave on Dagobah for the last year or so, you’ll know that Disney/Lucasfilm movie machine is now kicked into gear. The Force Awakens (also known as Episode VII) is set for a 15th of December 2015 release at the cinemas. Great news for Star Wars fans, eager to see the continuing adventures of Luke, and his space chums, even better news for Wargamers if the hushed rumours on the net end up being true.

I’ve been hearing bits about the possibility of Games Workshop getting the license to produce a miniature wargame about said franchise. So how much truth is there to the myth?

West End Games' Star Wars Miniatures Battles game.

I think if it happened, it would lure me back (even at their prices) as well as a lot of others too. I can imagine some pretty nice tasty miniatures coming out, even just from a collectors view they’d get loads of sales. I’m not saying it’s not been done before, remember back in the day WEGs skirmish game and the excellent 25mm Grenadier miniatures (plus Fantasy Flights X-Wing & Imperial assault, WOTCs collectable mini game too) but I do think GW would make some lovely stuff for it. They’d probably use their usual rules no doubt, or some iteration of, but that’s GW for you.

With Disney now the proud owners of all things SW, lets remember that they invested over £4 Billion, money they will want returns on. A lot of that cash will come from licencing the shit out of the franchise, so you’ll end up seeing literally everything you can stick a logo on, being branded with Star Wars. From what I’ve read, there will be so much new official movies, TV, cartoons, comics, books and games adding to the canon, it seems they have huge plans to milk the fuck out of it, every last drop from chewbaccas tit (so to speak)

So, yeah, I’ve heard bits about there was some possibility of GW getting a license, but it all seems to be hush hush. I know that from time to time, people from GW pass this way, so they are quite welcome to get in touch with me (confidentially if need be) and send me a little tidbit of info, in fact if anyone could corroborate this rumour, I’d be happy to know. I know I can get on the hate wagon for GW sometimes, but it’s just the GW of today is not the GW we have now (blah, blah blah, back in the 80’s etc etc…) I would show some love for them if this is true (although I’m not putting any stock into it) I’d also cream my pants if it were to be released in 15mm….

Say, even if they did, the success of the new movie would directly affect the success of the game. There’s no guarantee that Episode 7 will be any good. Sure it’s got the oldies (I think I’m ok with Luke doing the Jedi master obi wan thing, but the others meh…) but it might end up being panned for not living up to the hype, I don’t think that’d do a potential GW game too good. Still, it is Star Wars (It’s a game of swings and roundabouts) but we’re going to have to see what JJ Abrams can do.

As ever, if you have something to add on this subject, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it, or if you actually know anything for sure, please get in touch via the comments section here or via the contact page.

May the Force be with you!!

Fan Vs Fan, Tales of Star Wars fandom and extended universes…

In times gone by when I was a nipper, I remember the old crappy plastic chewbacca costume I used to own. How I’d run around the place pretending to be the famous wookie co pilot of the millenium falcon, I was nuts about Star Wars.

As luck would have it, I’m still a fan today. You know when someone asks if your choice is Trek or Wars, wars wins hands down everytime. Even though I’m not a die hard fanboy, I still enjoy the franchise, and I’m quite stoked about the news of all things episode 7. For us old school original trilogy fans, it’s what we’ve been waiting for for ages, all the old gang back to save the galaxy! Wahoo!

I like to follow the latest movie news in general, but I visit a news blog as often as I can that keeps upto date on the latest developments on the new movie  starwars7news.com, it’s a pretty good site and a good read if you like all things wars.

What does strike me as addictive reading over there, is the comments sections after each post, sometimes rather odd, sometimes funny and sometimes quite embarrassed for some of the saddo’s that post there.

You see, what really intregues me is the sheer poison and hatred that seems to be generated by the various sects of fandom over there. On one hand, you have die hard fans of the OT (original Trilogy) who think all the later additions to the wars verse is just not good, while you have PT fans (Prequel Trilogy) who talk shit about Annakin being the chosen one all the time (and darth Plagueis). Then you’ve got EU fans (Extended universe) who love all the crappy spin off novels, comics and so forth.

But guess what? They all seem to be at each others throats over there for some reason! I know that in some fans it instills a savage passion about the whole franchise, but come on, it’s a fucking film.

I’m not kidding about some of the vitriol spouted on there I’ve read, usually pretty childish and disturbing (By disturbing I mean grown ups swearing and arguing about star wars, it’s pathetic) but, I find myself visiting regularly going there, just to see what shite gets posted! It’s strangely addictive to read how these sub sections of the star wars community are willing to clash with each other, as well as all the speculative fanfic fantasists that offer their predictions of how they think the new trilogy will link back to what has been set as canon.

Funniest thing I think is now that Lucasfilm/Disney have pretty much wiped out most of the EU garbage post Return of the Jedi, this has turned the EU fans rabid at times, they simply will not let go of the mostly piss poor un-star warsy material that was generated in the time there was a star wars hiatus.

Don’t take my word for it, go and have a read your self, I find it hard to stomach myself at times, and I feel ashamed to class myself as a fan if this is the kind of no marks that make us laid back fans look like dicks!

Myself, I’m a fence sitter, there’s bits of all the star wars stuff I like and dislike, but remembering 1977 and seeing it in my local cinema, I’d class myself in the OT (as long as I can hit the rest with a lightsaber, I’m in!!)

Here’s to Episode 7 being some good!! (hopefully…)

Now did I ever tell you about the time I could have been an extra in the Phantom menace…..

May the force be with you……

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Star Bowl Fantasy Football Miniatures on Indiegogo

7 Jun

Hello there folks, I just saw this on frother’s and thought it’d be worthy of a mention (I just hope it doesn’t grass them up by doing so!) Still, what’s the point of publicising something like this on the net!

As you can see, this project is for a Star Wars inspired set of fantasy football miniatures. A cool idea and well executed too. If only it weren’t for the fact this is not an officially licensed product. This would not stop me from getting some if I wanted them, but I don’t think the Empire of the Mouse would be happy at all with this. Somehow I think that soon this is going to be pulled when someone realises this is a really dumb move.

If people think GW’s legal department is bad, when the IP lawyers get a sniff of this, a C&D might be the least of this guy’s worries….

It is a shame, but the reality is that to officially license the iconology is going to be a lot of cash, and if your launching a project like this on a crowdfunding platform to ask for investment, you probably don’t have the money to get the license in the first place.

I mean, just take a look at the concept pic, and the miniature of the Not Yoda. I really do feel sorry for the guy as he seems a very creative and talented fella, the worst thing about it is, if he doe’s achieve funding, the lawyers will probably sting him for more than he makes in total. Someone needs to tell him at least, before Mickey Rat’s guys get to him.

Star Wars VII: JJ Abrams to direct

BBC News – Star Wars VII: JJ Abrams to direct.

Latest Star Wars rumours seem to have been focused on who would direct the latest in the franchise. Now it has been chosen (Imagine I said that in the style of Yoda….) JJ Abrams!

Well, I would have to agree that it would seem one of the better choices of director, I’m no fan of Trek, but the reboot was pretty cool. He admits that growing up he was more of a Star Wars fan than Star Trek, so hopefully he’ll kick ass!

Trust me, it could have been worse, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say. This will either make or break him in legendary terms in movie history.

we will see….
