Grinning Skull Miniatures: Greens, greens everywhere etc, etc..

16 Sep

draxx0011

Howdy all, just got around to showing off a few more greens I’ve been doing over the last few weeks, these lot are virtually done, however I might do a few minor additions/alterations to small aspects until I’m happy enough with em’!

I finally got to finish the Draxxion battle group from before. As you can see two troopers, a heavy and a larger alpha leader to go with the larger overseer elite. You’ll notice that the normal troopers are smallest, wiry ones, and the heavy is stockier and a lot bulkier to carry the additional load. The alpha is as you’d expect, biggest, these fellers are dragons and I imagined them to keep getting bigger depending upon their age, eventually he would become one of the overseer elite if he survived long enough, maybe eventually becoming a huge elder dragon  heading his own clan!

draxx0018

You’ll notice the overseer elite in the background, hopefully I’ll be doing one more overseer, he’s going to be a catcher, scout, no quite sure what I’ll name him, but his role will be that of a gatherer of the wounded oggam/human/alien to be made into fleshy burgers and snacks for the OAM Corp (Omni Amalgamated Meat Corp.) in the carnage Continuum fluff related stuff. (It’s always better with a bit of fluff…!!) That one will have an option for him to be holding an oggam or a human by the throat. As well as a bag full of tasty victims ready to be processed!!

Also up is a preview of another race connected with the Draxx, the loyal and ruthless Volpurgi. Here’s the first of them to give you an idea of what to expect.

draxx0010

draxx0009

draxx0008

These little fellers are the hunters, scouts and eyes and ears of the OAM Corp, the vicious alien food production corporation, who exploit loopholes in galactic laws for the trade of various snackfood of dodgy origins. The Volpurgi are human sized ranging from about 5 foot to 6 feet in extremes. The Volpurgi homeworlds were conquered by the Draxx centuries ago, and pledged loyalty in return for not being destroyed, plus they smell “doggy” to say the least, and taste awful, so they serve in great numbers with several Draxxion clans who were part of the alliance.

you’ll also notice that they have a look of a certain cartoon personality (which was entirely intentional) without being a carbon copy. what can I say, I watch too many cartoons! I find them in keeping with the grinning skull style, not being too realistic (lets face it, scifi is totally unrealsistic anyway!) Please don’t ask me to even try hard scifi, cos it won’t happen, there’s loads ofpeople out there who do that already, and they’re so much better at it than I, or ever hope to be. so just don’t go there!

Last up, the fierce Okvan oggam warbeast for the L.O.A. troops (League of Anthracks) THE CLUKKATRIX!!

draxx0005

This wee feller (We’ll ok, he’s big) The result of Okvan genetics on the humble groundbird. By using the Okvan secret formula X, it allows the okvans to rapidly create intelligent humanoid birds from the ones found on the homeworld. Such species as Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Turkeys, Dodos and so on can be turned into deadly Chukk warriors. Excessive amounts directly fed into the creatures result in intense mutations that combine all of Bird and saurian from ancient genes, switched back on.

The stable mutations are kept and trained as warbeasts and gladfatorial beasts, fighting for the pleasure of their masters. I’ve wanted to get this done for ages, and to be honest I wanted to expand the Okvan side of the LOA, since I feel that the LOA troops so far have less options than the empire troops. It’s not until you try and build armies with  the oggam that run in concordance with the background that I’ve written, do you see what combinations you can get. I want to support the entire oggam line totally if I can, so that players have maximum options for oggam Vs oggam stuff, and get totally different forces from each other. With the addition of the chukk for the LOA, I can imagine players might want to field armies of chukk eventually, so even they’d need some big back up. You have to think that in my Oggam sphere, the LOA are my chaos types, and chukk are beastmen. This ones just a really big one!

draxx0003

I’ll post a better size comparison later, but for scale with the rest, here’s he next to the Volpurgi:

draxx0007

Again bear in mind that the Volpurgi is human sized, Like I said, he’s a big monster and I think players of other scales and genres could make use of them too, it is basically a humanoid Cockatrice so it’d be cool for fantasy in 15mm and 28/32mm as well. I might do another variation on the same theme, a big riding beast that I’ve coined “Chukkasaurus Rex” that’s more chicken/T-rex. Thats one for the future though.

Well, that’s it for now, I’ll get some other stuff posted with a few WIPs I’m working on, and maybe you’ll get to see some of the Kize forces I have done.

Ciao

Grinning Skull Miniatures: My growing Oggam warhosts…

20 Aug

DSCF2728 Although the title of this post, does sound a bit like some kind of medical condition, I can assure you even so my Oggams have been growing, I’m not in any pain!! Seriously though (Well, not too serious…) I just wanted to show you my warbands being prepared for some WAR PIGS playtesting, I still have a fair bit of painting, terrain making and writing left to do, but at least things are starting to come together slowly with the whole thing. In between sculpting new stuff, back logs of miniatures in my painting queue and so forth, the ideas continue to flow regarding the famous mutant pig ogres and the game universe of all things Grinning Skull, otherwise known as the “Carnage Continuum”, the messed up place born from my head!! I would show you here my latest creations in green, such as the now finished “Clukkatrix” and the treacherous canine Volpurgi troopers, but I forgot to take some photos in my haste for getting away this week! I do promise to get the pics up next week, along with some fluff concerning the whole Okvan Chukk and their oggam masters. (And some about the role of the Volpurgi and how they fit in…) Anyway, on to the real business. Above you can see two units of my League of Anthracks battle brothers and fire support from an accompanying Firrog Tor fire warrior. It’s highly likely that they will be joined by a couple more units of armoured brothers, and and an elite unit of heavy Okvan Stormtroopers too. I’m planning on some support from a Stank (Oggam sewage firing armoured vehicle) and a Trog troop transport, but that’ll be later. Anywhoo, here’s a few pics. DSCF2720 DSCF2721 DSCF2722 DSCF2725 DSCF2727 As for my opposing side from the Empire of Og, up to press I have two units of oggam light infantry done (well, there’s a unit away on photo duties elsewhere…) but, they do have vehicle support from a finished converted APC, complete with custom sculpted tank commander. I have a Trog transporter on the go as well, but that aint finished yet (you can see the undercoated vehicle in the pic) these dudes even have a allied Scrofa Truffle miner and his loyal pigdog in tow, hired to root out precious fungi for the boss! DSCF2332 DSCF2229  DSCF2231 DSCF2232 You might have noticed in the background of the first pic, some strange looking buildings, these are prototype designs for styles of oggam architecture which will be playing a big part of the WAR PIGS campaign rules, more about them later as I’m still working on a lot of designs and types. As you know all the standard figures used are from my Grinning Skull range available from 15mm.co.uk if you fancy getting some for yourself! Ciao!

So, what’s what in the new Grinning Skull range? (Part 1)

28 May

grn00_300dpi

So, I guess I’d better put a bit more meat on the bone for those of you who are interested in what figures are in the new Grinning Skull range. What exactly are each of the miniatures and what’s their background?

Therefore I will reveal to you a little more information about each of them and help colour in a bit of background about them! I know that folks will like to work these figures into their own games and settings, but I’d like to share with you where I was coming from in creating these figures.

The Grinning Skull Miniature range can be found at 15mm.co.uk

grn01_300dpi

Ok, lets start with GRN01:  The Mutant Reptiloid soldier.

These troopers are big fellers, a nice heavy trooper while not really meant for their swiftness, I had envisioned squad after squad in some Draxxion Khatoika war clan (The Draxxion are many races of sentient saurians all of which are decended from their ruling elites dragons and their close kin) The Reptiloid being a stock type of warrior, with a this kind of mutant two headed reptiloid having either coming from one of the Draxx homeworlds that has ancestry of some hydra dragon lord, or vat grown to maturity for the purpose of war (or egg grown, however you prefer) I’ll sure be adding other reptiloids and Draxxion in the future, so look out for them.

grn02_300dpi

GRN02: Kize Soldier.

Now, the Kize are a race of psionic/telepathic worm humanoids with a single eye. Distantly related to the Oggam home world’s native Stingworm (which start life as an intestinal parasytic worm, before being defecated out and raised as a warbeast), the Kize will infest a world with just a few individuals and set to releasing their microscopic young into a water supply. These in turn grow inside an unknowing host who ingest them, and gradually hatch out and invasion begins. Eventually I’ll be sculpting some more Kize troopers, with other types and a few gribbly bits like monsters and vehicles possibly.

grn03_ws

GRN03: Pliiim Adventurer.

Pliiim are a race I created a long time ago for the Spacemaster ICE game campaign we used to play, but then was transplanted to my Universal Carnage Scifi game from wayback. I thought that they should feature as a cameo in my range at least, but who knows, if folks like him, I’ll no doubt do some more Pliiim figures (heavy weapons, troopers and tech)

grn04_300dpi

GRN04: Oggam Pigdog.

These creatures are a strange breed of mutant pig on the homeworld. Used by most Oggam as guard dogs, pets, hunting beasts and all manner of tasks and jobs. They are most prized if one can find a pigdog with a nose for truffles. Scrofa Truffle hunters and miners always have one or more trained pigdogs for this task. (Oggam do love the truffles…)

grn05_300dpi

GRN05; League of Anthracks standard barer.

As you may know about the League of Anthracks, these are the nasty, death god worshipping Ogs, fanatical war priests and zealots. Heres the battle brother standard barer. I love his face, he’s got a big cheeky grin that just cracks me up! (I know I sculpted him, and it could be seen like me laughing at my own jokes etc. but, I love it!)

grn06_300dpiGRN06: Oggam Mechanic.

Another cheeky faced one! The Og Empire  has vast resources invested in the Mechanog war machine. These maintain and create the heavy support for the entire empire, from bikes, to tanks and armoured vehicles, and the mighty Ogmech. It was fitting that they would need some field mechanics to accompany the empire squads (who knows what equipment a warband would find on the battlefield?) These guys fit that role. There will be more Mechanog stuff later, still busy on the Scrofa and okvans for now!

grn07_300dpi

GRN07: Oggam Light Infantry Trooper #1

This was the first Oggam to come to being, a commission piece from Richard “Spacecow” Smith, he’s a lovely little model. He’s got that great piggy face that goes fantastic with the other Ogs. The Light Infantry are intended for the Empire of Og, but they will work well in the other factions too!

grn08_300dpi

GRN08: Oggam Light Infantry Trooper #2.

It was my intention to arm the Ogs in the light infantry, with different stuff, so this little guy has a pistol. He’s got a really creepy face I think, but giant ogre sized pig mutants would be creepy, don’t you think!!

grn09_300dpi

GRN09; Oggam light Infantry standard.

If the LOA have big bold battle standards, so must the empire! Empire troops are well drilled and patriotic chaps all in all, so the role of the standard barer is an important one, and I wanted him to look the part. He’s got a south american revolutionary look to him,  so I imagine he’d do fine as a Notocheros freedom fighter too (I’ll get round to doing them I promise, when I get lots of others ticked off my list!)

grn10_300dpi

GRN10: League of Anthracks Battle Brother #1.

This LOA battle brother is quite a serious faced og, he really means business! I think by the moment I sculpted this one, I finally worked out the pattern of how to scupt an Oggams face. A little variation from figure to figure provides a huge range of expressions, which is where the unique selling point of the range is, its something you can see looking down on the battlefield for gaming. Yes they are cartoony, but they are supposed to be!

grn11_300dpi

GRN11: League of Anthracks Okvan Storm trooper.

The Okvans are part of the LOA and reside on a large country to the south west of the main continent. Their land is harsh and dangerous, filled with poison and polluted air, swamps and savage creatures. Okvan Stormtroopers are well equipped to deal with these awful climes with heavy enviromental resistant suits. The troopers are elites among the Okvan hordes and can be found with other LOA troops where ever they are. Some legends even say they have elaborate blood drinking rites when they celebrate the full moons…..

grn12_300dpi

GRN12: Scrofa Tribe Hero.

As you might know, the Scrofa are the wild, mad max oggam tribes, and even so he’s the only Scrofa miniature in this release, the scrofa will be found in the armies of most factions to some degree. They aren’t fussy in who they tend to hang with so often will be in retinues of Og Empire warlords, guides, trackers and scouts, Truffle hunters and miners etc. The Scrofa are in line at the moment with me modelling a set of Hoggit gangers, so those who fancy getting a Scrofa warband won’t be dissapointed (There are some already done, but can’t tell you a release date for them yet, but I’ll let you know when they are!)

Grinning Skull Miniatures Released Today!!

oggamcomicpreview

So, the day has come for my very own miniatures range, Grinning Skull Miniatures to be available on general release!

It’s been a long journey to get them from their humble beginnings to the fully fledged range as they are, and I’m really glad that this project has bore fruit! The excellent team at 15mm.co.uk have done an excellent job in turning my little piggies (and aliens) into great looking miniatures for everyone to enjoy!

Priced at just £1 each, or get all the first wave set of 24 for £22, they are more than a match for many a fighting force on the battlefield! The Oggam are big meaty, mean MoFo’s who mean business!

I feel a great relief that finally I achieved what I set out to do (with help of course!) and bring them from my imagination into war gaming reality. Even so that sort of sounds as if that’s it from my end, well you couldn’t be more further from the truth. This set of Grinning Skull Miniatures is just the first set of releases you’ll see in the line. It won’t be the last that you’ll see of the Oggam (or Oggum if you prefer!) as even more of my war pigs setting will be expanded upon to include everything that’s included in the Book of the Oggam (Available to download from here the bookof theoggam v2 or on the 15mm.co.uk website) and lots more that aren’t! These will even include fearsome Oggam war beasts and handlers like the psychotic Mugal minotaur, psionic giant intestinal worms called Stingworm, and the chemically resurrected  remains of fallen oggam known as “Zoggom”!!

There will be more troops and specials for the other races like the Kize, Reptiloids and the Pliim, as well as new alien types such as the Volpurgi, Draxxion, Charcodonians and the forces of OAM Corp meat farmers. There will be native alien flora and fauna, and lots of other interesting stuff too, you might even see a few mutant zombies and killer clowns as well!

I’ll be putting up any previews, concept stuff and greens here on the blog, as well as additional background and art, so please pop in from time to time to see what’s new!!

I do hope that you the end user, that I have served you well, after all, all these figures were created and brought to reality with you lot in mind, so that you’ll get a kick out of using them in your own games and to have fun with. Thank you!!

If you have any suggestions, questions or feedback on the range, please feel free to get in touch and let me know! (Don’t forget to fill in the survey at the side of the page to help influence the future of Grinning Skull Miniatures!!)

Peace out

More 15mm sculpts for your perusal….

24 Nov

So, off my workbench I have another bunch of new sculpts of 15mm sci-fi goodness, the latest Oggam and a few other odds and sods.

First up the Ogs, the latest in the League of Anthracks troops, an Oggam Storm trooper, which I would love a few units of these alone, painted with star wars storm troopers in mind. A Sith style priest to go with them methinks….

Next, the first Oggam Pigdog war/hunting beast, ideal for any side in the conflict or for a strange alien beast in other games….

The next in my man eating plant set of alien flora and fauna….

These are my latest alien creations, I have another 3 on the go, but I reckon these would make a great invasion army in a retro sci-fi way, let me know what you think…

Another one for the alien flora and fauna set, a deathworld skull spider bug.

As ever here are the latest creations compared to a GZG human for an idea of size in 15mm scale.

There are still another 5-6 on my workbench either nearly done, or part. I must add that I’m loving the sculpting and am improving steadily at the art of 15mm. More weirdness, monsters and strange aliens to come so hopefully you out there can begin gaming with them!
