Mini Sculpting: 28mm Ettin/2 headed troll; Fnar-frag the two faced!

Ok, you’re going to have to forgive my net connection, it’s not great at the best of times, but like I have told you before, I promised to show you some stuff I have been working on.

This is a personal WIP for my WFB orc and gobbo army, mainly my troll mob. I must admit that trolls are my fave lot out of the orc stuff, and have scored me many victories while using them in game. The only trouble I find with them is the fact that they are so darned expensive to buy, so I spend plenty of time searching around different places for old troll figures to use as proxies, so much that I decided to add to my ranks by making some myself.

DSCF3273

I thought I’d make him of the two headed variety, after rewatching “Troll Hunter” I thought it would stand out more than the usual type, and that he’d serve best for part of my command section of my two units. First thing you might notice is the weird positioning of his hand. This is for a reason, I wanted him to be holding a goblin marionette puppet on strings. However that still might change if I decide otherwise, but for now thats the plan.

Also I wanted him to exhibit a left/right personality, sort of good cop/bad cop, so that’s why the puppet holding side has a goofy, child like  essence to it, while the other is more “business” orientated and ready for some pagga!

DSCF3282

Also, I wanted his gait to reflect that being a troll, he really needed to be quite deformed and twisted, especially with having the two headed mutation, so the slight twist in his stride is intentional. I wanted him to match the other trolls I have, so he needed plenty of warty scales, which will highlight nicely when painted in contrasting colour, oh yeah, and popeye type fore arms too!

I think it’s great the fact that GW old school trolls have the definitive cartoon look to them, which I needed to try and match, especially with him being more of a character figure than the usual rank and file troll. Lots of you might know that I sometimes diss GW, but it also matches my own style of modelling in a cartoon look, and seeing as though it’s going to be used for oldhammer and 6th Ed WFB, I don’t see the problem. Before anyone mentions the base, he’s now glued onto a 40×40 monster sized base with gluegun glue, just because it is a quick and easy way of adding a durable texture instead of sculpting it on, oh the many uses of the humble gluegun!!

I really want to release my own range of 28mm trolls and troll kin in the future hopefully, maybe a KS (ok, so don’t moan about crowdfunding, I actually think stuff like Kickstarter is a fine idea and many out there are a bit sick of the whole thing, but it does serve a purpose) I have quite a few ideas for several different types of troll races that would fit nicely into the O&G army lists, as proxies for the various troop types rather than the regular Orcs and their ilk.

Next up will be a decent paint job once I finsih the puppet goblin, or war yoyo, or even a human casualty (still not 100% on what to do) but I’ll show you once the next bit has been done.

Next up, is my Oggam settlement board (once my connection will allow more uploads)

Tally ho miniature chums!

Zomtober Extra: My Horde, my horde, oh lordy lord!

8 Oct

Zombtober

Well, it’s not really another Zombtober entry, but I thought I’d show a bit more 15mm zombie related madness, this time I wanted to show you my still growing herd of walkers in the scale.

It’s made up from all of my finished zombies, small and larger sizes to represent human (or zombie) diversity.

I still have about half again in various sized singles, small swarms and medium sized swarms, which equates to a lot of zomers! I think I’m pretty much done with them as far as numbers are concerned, I reckon it’ll be survivor types from now on, lets face it, I’m going to need a fair few to cope with this lot! Plus I think i’ll be expanding some other baddies I already have (Grey Aliens & UFOs, werewolves, cultists, giant spiders etc) and lots of B-movie type villains that will fit with my modern city stuff. (Godzilla anyone?) Superhero battles would be good too, as would plenty of other options (vampires vs werewolves, civil unrest/riots, police vs gangs/terrorists and so forth.)

I’ll be back later with some more Zombtober inspired zombie themed stuff, and obviously later in the week with my next Zombtober entry.

Ciao for now!

Grim’s Modelling Tips: Fake Grass Freebies!

13 Jun

artificial-grass

So, I have found something out completely by accident that is excellent for us scratch builders & wargamers, yet the best thing is, it wont cost you a penny!

A while ago, my missus and I were talking about turfing a few patches of bare earth in our garden and discussing options. Rather than shelling out for real grass turf, we thought we’d explore the artificial astroturf route, being that our kids are kinda destructive at the best of times and that real grass would take a real beating with their antics. I decided to get some prices & info about it, and discovered that most suppliers of the stuff, actually are willing to send out small samples of the various grades and styles of it.

This lead me on to thinking, just maybe this stuff might be useful as a potential free modelling material. Soon enough I was using my Google-fu to track down any places I could snag plenty of the sample freebies for my, Ahem’ “garden design research” (Which is what I told the wife!!) knowing full well that when she’d had a good look at all the info etc, all the left over samples of the stuff would be mine to butcher and create some new wargaming scenery!

Sure enough, within a week I was inundated with a variety of sizes and styles of the wonder turf, to be honest I hadn’t expected just the volume of what I had managed to blag in the way of sample bits (There are lots)

DSCF2330

Ok this pic is just a few pieces that I have now, as you can see there’s a 15mm Pliim adventurer for scale of the bits. They do come in a lot of different sized samples, from A4 page sized, to smaller squares, rectangles and circles. At this moment of writing I have two full to bursting large plastic carrier bags, stuffed full with every style and thickness of artificial turf! Not bad for nothing, delivered free to your door!!

Now not that I’m going to encourage you lot to start blagging every available fake grass supplier in your nation (Even so, if you really wanted, I couldn’t stop you….!) but these are great materials with plenty of terrain making potential. To further just how good these could be for wargaming, I even spotted a trader at the recent Sheffield Triples 2013, selling offcut bits of these to use as fields and crops !

DSCF2331

You can see from the close up, the length of the fibres for each type would suit many different options, from the short cheap stuff (Ideal for just grassed areas) to the longer more expensive “realistic” types being suited for things like long grassy unkempt fields, jungle undergrowth, and even cut into strips, stuck on bases with added flock/scatter to create quick and easy bushes and hedging!  Even cut into little bits to add tufts and scrub to other stuff, the things you can create from this with a bit of imagination are myriad!!

DSCF2328

DSCF2329

As you can see from these pics, you don’t even need to do anything to it to make use of it (Although I would recommend adding stuff like bases, flock and bits to really make it come to life a tad more) I’m sure that you could really go to town with this stuff and create some pretty impressive bits with very little effort. It can even take some haircutting to trim if it’s too long, or you need some barer bits etc.

So those in the UK will be easily satisfied with a quick google search for free samples, and those in the rest of the world will need to find suppliers where they are and enquire for free samples from their end. You could even try DIY/hardware/Garden centres and just ask for some offcut samples (although you’ll need to blag a bit, so don’t tell them you want to use it for wargame modelling materials! Tell em’ you can’t decide what kind you need for your lawn or something! You know, make it up!!)

Anyway, if I have inspired any of you to create something using the info, please let me know, show me some pics and i’ll post them up here (and I’ll show you my efforts too, that is, when I get around to it, busy, busy, busy….!)

Peace out Freebie hunters….

New Zombie Wargaming Community on G+

24 Jan

ZOMB

So, I have just recently started to use G+, I wasn’t really into it at all to start, but while browsing the groups, I noticed that there wasn’t a zombie wargaming group there. With that fact in mind, I started one! Yes I know there are quite a few very nice and already established isolated groups of Z gamers on the web, but as we well know, as with bacon and zombies, they make things better, even G+! I’m not sure they have a G+ bacon group, but wouldn’t be surprised at all! Hey if Gangnam style can have a G+group with hundreds of members, there can at least be a G+ Zombie wargames group!

A group like this can only survive and flourish if people are willing to join and take part, of course I will try my best to keep the conversation going and engage with as much Z related gaming as possible, but we do need others to get involved if it’s to be a great place to visit and take part. Hopefully it will cover all scales, styles and rules, 28mm, 15mm and the new 10mm too, even 6mm if you could get the figures! Post your galleries, links, batreps, in fact anything Z gaming related.

Above you can see the graphic that you can put on your own sites, just copy and link it to the group at https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/100825129961108758878 or simply just click and pay us a visit! Feel free to contribute your own slant on this genre of gaming, like I said, the more you put in, the more we should all get out! If your not a google member, sign up and get one! I’m just starting to realise just what you can do with the integrated services and tools, so it would seem that others are catching on too. While it doesn’t have the reputation and users like sites such as Facebook, there’s no reason to think over time G+ won’t gain more popularity in time.

So with all that said, please get involved if it sounds like your kind of thing.

Peace out….
