40k Plague Marines, Death Guard Army progress…

11 Sep

Its been a while since I posted anything on my Deathguard Army for 40K, and realised I hadn’t shown off my plague marines. I have taken the same direction with all the models in the army, with very few actual GW unmodified minis. Sure there are a few, but I decided that from the start that I was going to have as unique a force as possible.

I took a few Primaris that I had knocking about and converted them to the cause, and a few old 2nd edition monopose old skool ones as well, and went to town on messing them up. There’s a couple of Ramshackle games minis there too, very nurgle to begin with, but I added a few bits here and there to make them different.

These 3 here are the converted primaris, Painted up and converted, they fit right in to the army. Plus, it saved me cash on buying more plague bois!!

These were the results of converting the old 2nd edition marines, although they required a lot more work and bits, I kinda like them, although I think the icon bearer is my fave out of the two.

These next lot are the standard GW plague marines, which everyone has, another reason to mix in as many conversions as possible. Don’t get me wrong, they look great, I just didn’t want carbon copies of them populating my squads.

Like I said, nothing special, with passable paintjob to match, I’ve given up the need for outstanding painting these days, unless I want to give a model some extra special treatment, I don’t bother too much, I just want to get them painted to an OK standard, and that’ll do for me (they are only rank and file after all…)

These are Ramshackle games figures (forgive me when I say I have forgot the actual model names) but I added hardly anything bar a smoke stack on one as the actual one had broken in “cat” accident while undercoating!! Bolters were added to make them fit.

They fit in very well just painted up as all the other plague marines rank and file.

As for these WIPs, the astute of you might notice they are “Space Rangers” converts. This line is ages old and I wanted to bolster my units cheaply, so these guys are just that. More of them when they are done, as I have a fair few of them to get finished.

Another WIP is this guy. Heavily converted from all sorts of bits and pieces. I like this guy, although he may end up as a personality for the Purge contingent I have planned.

Overall, I like the way these guys are coming along. Yeah, a few are rough around the edges, but its Nurgle, so doesn’t matter too much when ranked up together.

I’ll show you more next time, possibly spawn or some other bits…

Rogue Stars: Let the ideas start to flow!

16 Sep

So, with Osprey’s Rogue Stars ( Rogue Stars: Skirmish Wargaming in a Science Fiction Underworld (Osprey Wargames) ) winging its way to me through the post (yes, I succumbed to it in the end, the temptation was far too great!) I really look forward to getting it so I can have a really good read to ingest all the lovely space opera flavour I’m hoping there to be!

I’ve not really had much chance to peruse any osprey wargames rules other than Frostgrave, but I have read my share of other Osprey books (I absolutely love the Jason and the Argonauts book, review of which is here: Osprey Adventures: Jason and the Argonauts Review)

All these ideas flowing, with plenty more to come I expect, especially when I get a good browse at the rules and fluff has got me thinking. I am going to need a new baseboard or two and maybe some playing mats, plus a fair bit of 28mm scifi scenery will need to be made, not to mention getting the minis together (I think I have plenty of miniatures to fit this game already, but I have seen a load that I wouldn’t mind getting…!)

I’ll try my best to do to create more min scenic tutorials, just like the Grim’s Dungeons of Doom series!

What I would like to do is take this opportunity to invite you on my journey too, I’ll document my thoughts, ideas, miniatures purchases & painting, scenery tutorials and so forth, similar to Grim’s Dungeons of Doom and even share any battle reports along the way.

Both spotlights are working! There will be no escape for trespassers!

I suppose that this is going to start me off with a new article series as a result, but I reckon that those 28mm Sci-fi gamers of you out there (especially warhammer 40k, Oldskool Rogue Trader and other Sci-fi wargames that are available) will find plenty of useful stuff for them to justify it.

I’m thinking that I’ll make an interior set of terrain similar to Grim’s Dungeons of Doom, but not too much, that way it’ll be interchangeable with the walls, floors and other fantasy scenic stuff (the cavern walls will fit nicely in an Alien planet theme, maybe some alien flora and fauna, but then I’m going to have to do a few 28mm Sci-fi buildings and maybe something along the lines of the old Necromunda scenery from the 90’s. Where ever possible, I’ll point you in the way of useful resources and info too, which will be a nice change to 15mm model making in the Sci-fi wargaming I’ve got used to.

Like I’ve said, I imagine that there’s going to be loads of ideas free-flowing, but I really want to know what you think too. Is there anything I should be trying out? What scenics do you want to see me make? Just let me know by commenting below,  tell me about your ideas or your experience of Rogue Stars gameplay.

I’ll be back later with some possible miniature choices, that is, once I’ve plundered my lead piles…:)

GW’s Age of Sigmar. Should I give a sh*t about it?

20 Aug

60010299006_WHAgeofSigmarBoxENG01

So the old Warhammer is gone. Replaced by GW‘s latest brainfart, Age of Sigmar. As an oldhammer player and veteran since 2nd Edition WFB, I’m not sure how to take it. Of course, this effects nothing in terms of playing WFB, I’ll still be able to play, but this new direction GW has taken, leaves me a bit undecided about this new release.

I’ve read tons about it on line, with mixed reviews that usually end up as “meh”, and comparisons to sigmar’s lot being more 40K than Warhammer fantasy. It makes me wonder if it’s not the fault of the game, but rather us old guard making all the noise.

It’s a brave departure for GW to be giving away the rules free, we warhammer players can jump straight in and play no problem (I will, at some point) but on the other hand, I can see their move being a canny conversion tool, designed to suck in existing players to the new stuff. I just think I’m not excited about it at all.

I’m old skool, I was brought up with GWs products and minis, they played a large role in my childhood and beyond, but I’m not crying about how it used to be, but maybe we hold this old period of gaming history in too high esteem. I’m not saying that WFB is the best wargaming system to ever grace this planet, sure it’s ok, but, I think we older gamers are just used to it. We have become set in our ways and hold Warhammer on a pedestal.

On the reverse, there are some things with Age of Sigmar (AoS) that don’t float my boat. don’t get me wrong, I’m still tempted to get the boxed set, who wouldn’t be. Everyone likes loads of miniatures. I just have some issues with the models themselves.

dfhjk

The Stormcast Eternals are my main gripe. I’m mixed about these. Even so years ago there were always going to be a celestial element versus chaos (ala the eternal champion influences from the early days) it had never panned out until now (only the chaos bit was expanded) The forces of order here, are a bit underwhelming, and far too space marine like for my liking. They are ok, but lack some oommff (So to speak)

Alternatively, if Sigmar is developed as a force, does this mean we’ll get some other new forces to represent the other lawful gods of the warhammer pantheon in a similar style? It’s possible, and could potentially create some really cool stuff.

The Khorne stuff in the box is ok, with a few good models and the rest sort of not. Again the similarities to 40k are apparent to me, so maybe this is trying to appeal to 40k players more than the rest. Since the 40k game is way more popular than WFB ever was, its a shrewd marketing move for them to do this, yeah I get it. Its just starting to feel like the warhammer fantasy flavour is from whats bolted on (like you can use your WFB armies and play it now with the free rules) Warhammer and all the miniatures from the previous incarnation, seems like its only now an afterthought to keep loyal WFB players who game in store, happy and subdued.

Just how does this guy manage to wipe his ass?

Also, some of the Khorne stuff seems a bit too S&M slannesh to me. Am I missing something, or is it just me?

I dunno, what it is with this, i’m in two minds. On one hand, this could be good eventually, and getting onboard with the game would be good. There’s a lot of great models coming out, and even though I’m not a fan of the prices GW charge, I’d buy a few bits (the rest from cheaper decent manufacturers!) but, on the other hand, it could be a fail and not interest me enough to play with the game, only to return to WFB or kings of war etc. At least the rules are free. Jesus, you could just play the game without the boxed set and play with whatever minis you like!

With my time, concentration and funds limited, I can’t make my mind up about it.

Please, share your thoughts, do you like it? have you played it? what do you think?

15mm Space Orcs: More and more…

4 Apr

Well, I’ll start by wishing all those reading, a happy easter, hope you enjoy your choccy eggs!

I thought I would start todays blog updates with some extra shots of my 15mm space orc army. If you saw the last post, that just detailed what I had finished thus far. This time, I want to show you the rest of the other bits, although some aint finished, I thought it would be a nice touch to see what my force is growing into.

First you’ll notice the addition of feral goblins, while these fellers are primarily used for my WFB snotlings, I see no reason not to include them in my space orc forces. They’ll just be a vicious mob of skirmishing cannon fodder, designed to tie up more deadly enemy units, while my other units take care of business. I have so many 15mm goblins lying around, I might have to develop a fantasy version of the goblinoid lot.

Next up is vehicles. These are a work in progress. I’ve got anothe wartruck, based on a toy 4×4 monster truck. I think it’ll be suitably over the top, and a nice fit with the other. Loads of work to do on it before its done.

Next up is an assault dropship, which is made from allsorts of bits. It did start as another project ages ago, which lay dormant in favour of other things. Fast forward to recent times, I decided to repurpose the original and add more bits (and I’ll probably add more) With these, its starting to feel like an invasion.

Loads of things to be done on that, but it’ll come together eventually. Bear in mind as well that I have tons of orcs to paint up, drednaughts, runts and bits. Its probably time to think about what I should be doing to put an opposing force together. I do have a not-tyranid-ish force on the back burner, but I think I might have to try either an imperial force or a chaos one…or squats…or genestealer cult..or….!!
