Crowdfunding Spotlight: TOR gaming Relics reinforcements 2 on GamingFunder

9 May

I just saw this crowdfunder advertised over on Facebook, and thought that it was worthy of attention, it’s a new campaign from the folks at Tor gaming, known for the Relics line of miniatures and wargaming rules. (Remember the stitchpunk fantasy football sackboy team?)

I’m not familiar with Gamingfunder, but the principle is pretty much the same as the usual (Indiegogo/KS). What struck me from all the stuff on offer is the miniature pictured above, I must admit that I really like it. It really does remind me of  the old UK kids show “Mr Benn” with his knight episode.

It also has a real “Labyrinth” movie feel, and loads of these would be fantastic as armoured goblins for my WFB orcs. They have some pretty good other stuff, but this one in particular caught my eye.

They are fully funded, so if you wanted get in on the action and get yourself some of their stuff, click the link below and take a look!

Another letter to “S” (Further adventures in blogland…)

19 Mar

semaltskullwarning

I have fleeting moments these days when it comes to my time on the web, much of it now is spent replying to messages and updating what needs to be done, so as it were, this post is the latest in the long line of my adventures (and misadventures) against that bane we can only mention as called “S” (Yes, them again!)

Regular followers of the story will know that these dodgy geezers like to spam website owners with tons of useless bot visits, messing with stats and wasting bandwith. Even so I didn’t really ever care about them or their activities at first, it did piss me off what they were doing to many others out there, so foolishly I kind of took it upon myself to champion the cause and get to the bottom of the whole thing and get website owners the answers they needed. (The things I do for you…)

Cutting the story short (If you don’t know what I’m on about, check out my previous posts on “S” emalt) what has been bugging me is the fact that the company seem to think they can convince people who are suspicious about them, by using my previous post A letter to “S” (I’m not saying it!) on their official blog and facebook page! When I displayed my indignation to them directly on both places under the comments there, not only were my comments deleted, but I’m not even allowed to post there anymore! What a flaming cheek!

Methinks another flowery letter to them will perk their interest in my plight, and since many of you have told me you enjoyed the last one, I thought I’d share this one publically with you as well!!

To S****t,

Right, there’s something that I’m going to ask you lot, and it’s really starting to piss me off about your shady company.
Ages ago I posted an article about you in which an open letter gave you the opportunity to come clean about your relentless spam crawler bots visiting many of our websites constantly, with fake visitor results that have been cause for concern.

In this letter, which was published https://thegrinningskull.wordpress.com/2014/01/16/dear-semalt-com-what-would-you-write/ and your answer https://thegrinningskull.wordpress.com/2014/01/20/a-letter-from-semalt-further-adventures-in-blogland/ which was also published, you attempted in the latter to justify yourself as just a simple SEO company with no ill intent, and that all your bots are causing no harm etc.

If that were the case, then I wouldn’t have such a problem as I do now, but my opinion is now totally different than it were. Yes, I did sympathise that you were just another web company just trying to make a crust, although you may have had an foot in mouth manner of self promotion.

No, you really are a nasty, twisted bunch, aren’t you?

For a while now, you lot have been trying to use these blog posts as a way of sedating public opinion that you are “safe” and implying that I agree or endorse you, a message to my visitors and other web users who come to you via Facebook or your pitiful corporate blog.

This is now my biggest issue.

I am formally (and as politely as I can) request that you remove this supposed user endorsement from both your blog post, and your Facebook page. Don’t think your doing me any favours for linking to me, I don’t need your help to get “real” visitors, I am capable of doing that myself quite easily by providing both useful and entertaining material for my readers, unlike yourselves who seem to shoot yourselves in the foot repeatedly in regard of the negative press you keep generating for your ultimately doomed endeavor.

I would have asked without the big ruckus, but since you ban me from posting comments on both the offending pages, I finally decided to go with another open letter (which will be published I can assure you along with your answer) to get your attention.

Oh by the way, congratulations on finally coming forward with an explanation about your spammy crawlers/bots. It’s not great, but finally you lot are attempting to address the problem, and I can be sure that hundreds will be asking that you remove their sites from your lists faster than a rat up a drainpipe, since you have caused them so much distress!

I can’t impress upon you just how much you lot are pissing off the web community with your antics. I have to laugh about your last reply to me, when you said, and I quote:

I don’t think this can be an issue, since nobody complains on bots that belong to Google, Bing and other search engines. There are so many services on the web that are believed to mess up the webmaster’s statistics. Now, would you have a look at this http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/apple.com? How does that grab you? Should Apple hire some headhunters to capture their owners? Today a lot of people become paranoic after all these mass media reports. But let’s come down to earth…

“The fact is, people actually “Trust” Google, Microsoft and Apple, they actually provide a decent service and have a far better track record as regards the people/users. These people aren’t paranoid, just concerned about how secure they are on the web from hacking, spam and data harvesting and theft, your extremely naive to resort to calling them paranoic and to come down to earth.”

I think it’s your company that needs to remove your heads from your asses, since you are the ones causing the trouble in the first place. What’s with you people? Are you sniffing helium or something? I fear by the time your finished you will be the ones falling back to earth, freefall without a parachute (well, you aint Felix Baumgartner are you?)

Just to reiterate, since you stop me from commenting on the pages mentioned, about the posts I want removed, I will assure you, if these links aren’t removed I will spam you with this complaint letter, over an over until you do, and to every public contact email you have until you do as I ask. If you do, I will stop.

We’ll see how you lot like being hassled repeatedly, like you have done to others. I will also encourage others to spam your emails for fun, just like you have to them, remember some of these sites have been bonafide professional business sites, and they are genuinely concerned your spam visits will lead to them being penalised by the big sites with their rankings, thus loosing them business. You said what harm? Plenty, just you don’t see, which leads me to my next bone to pick…

I know what your going to say, why the axe to grind so much, take a chill pill Mr G and settle down…you want to know, do you?

Not only do I feel that I am speaking on behalf of hundreds of disgrutled folks, and the issue with the links, you were the reason behind my blog suspension.

Yes you were!

So, I suppose i’m being petty, and yes I’ll admit that I am. I am always getting told I’m an arrogant son of a bitch (which swells my heart with pride I tells ya’!) and I really don’t appreciate that for me, just writing about your site and company has caused me to nearly get suspended.

I rely on my blog as a point of call for the possibility of commission based work, contact with friends and colleagues both old and new. My site has been two years of work in itself, yet one mention of you lot, and “I” get into trouble and classed as a spammer!

I don’t ever think that in my eyes, you’ll ever be raised above the bottom feeding trash I see you as, and if it were up to me, you’d be shut down for your web crimes. Is there a spammers of the year award? If there is, i’ll be certainly nominating you for it!

Look, just get it done removing my links from FB and your retarded blog and you’ll not get anymore shit from me (well, I can’t promise that, since I hate semalt so much) You do realise that there are groups mobilising around you to take semalt out of the equation.

Time is running out…..

Will “Hammer of the gods” Grundy

OK, you should know me by now, I rant and rant, but I do like to make my letters interesting reading! They just piss me off.

I sent this the other day, and still no reply. I’ll give them a couple more days before I start spamming every contact email I can find for them. Would you say 20 in each of their email inboxes is enough to start? As they say in the Bible (well maybe not) “Let Spam begat more Spam!!”

Incidentally, I come here baring real news for those who might need it concerning the dreaded “S” (or Shitmalt, which is my new name for them.)

First up is the Anti-shitmalt Facebook group, they have a few tips and info about how to complain and who to complain to, they can be located here if you want to join the group (Which if you hate em’ like hundreds of others, please do so!)

https://www.facebook.com/groups/659509637419910/

Also, if you check their blog, they have introduced a new feature that lets webmasters request that their sites be removed off their list for bot/crawler visits. Whether it is genuine is anyone’s guess, but a quick google or look on their blog will find the post I’m talking about (I don’t want to backlink to them if I can help it, so I’ll refrain if you don’t mind!)

Anyway, as soon as I get a reply, I’ll post it up here to let you know what crap they say, or if I get creative again and feel inspired to write to them again….

Here we go again……

Stories of Suspension, and Suspicion of Spammers…(and the “S” word…)

5 Feb

grinningdennissemalt

Ok, I thought I’d just clear up the reasons why this blog got taken down last week. I’ve had a lot of people ask just why it happened and the story behind it, so for what it’s worth, let me tell you before I draw a line about it…
I had prepared a post called “Doing the S-E-M-A-L-T karaoke” in which I just wanted to draw attention to this dodgy company that has caused so much ire for many of us out there recently. This article was done in my usual deliberate tongue in cheek manner, asking for those out there with any gripes could pose intentionally provocative or just plain rude questions to them (with preference to the more humorous ones) and further highlight the company’s shadiness and inability to give straight answers to the normal queries that folks may have about them.
Further in the post, I also highlighted the fact that their own blog had even less than the Grinning Skull about the company, plus the fact that I had left them a few comments on there telling them how I thought the other commenters there, were actually “sock puppets” spouting positive comments in order to fool the layperson into thinking they are actually an above board company. These sarcastic comments made by myself were also taken down by them to counter any negative reaction (of which i completely understand, I would have too under the circumstances if I were them!)
Anyway, as soon as I tried to post this article, I was frozen out from the entire wordpress system and alerted with a warning message, that highlighted the fact that I had been suspended for violating the TOCs of WordPress, either for the reasons of being flagged for spamming, or running articles detailing talk of S-E-O for purposes of ranking and such. Obviously this was utter bullshit and at the time, I did start to think that i’d either been hacked by the offenders (note that i’m not going to mention their name, or talk to much in detail about the whole thing, for reasons I’ll mention in a moment) or that they had had me taken down for my abuse and ridicule of them. Call me paranoid, but with all the talk these days of international snooping and hacking of data, you really never know. Plus, since the whole thing began, i’ve heard loads of conflicting stories about them, so there’s no wonder I was thinking that way!
I don’t know how many of you bloggers use Zementa for your postings, but for those who don’t, Zementa is a useful blogging tool that helps link your posts to useful info with suggestions, explanations and info from about the net. It is a usually decent tool that adds another level of detail to sometimes boring posts, but it would seem that this time it was my undoing! Without thinking I applied the links from the text I’d written with details from my article, linking them to the various explanations of the stuff I had wrote down (something I won’t be doing without thinking n future, I can add!) as is recommended by others while using the add on.
As per usual, I added my list of tags and key words, as you do with your posts, again not thinking I was doing anything wrong. This was also not a great idea, especially when it comes to the automated system employed by the wordpress software, when it comes to spam and such.
As it turns out, those two reasons seem the most likely reasons that the blog was suspended, the anti-spam measures in place flagged me as a spammer who was trying to diddle the rankings system in order to get better placement on the big G! This was all sorted with a few messages to the good “human” staff at support, when they realised I had been taken out of context in my aims with the post, and they reinstated me without delay.
It did highlight a flaw in the wordpress support system, that if there is a genuine reason and a blogger did actually need support in similar cases like this, when one is suspended, you can’t even post on the support forums to ask for help, nor is there an active email address to contact to try and sort things out. Luckily, it was sorted and reason triumphed in this matter. No hacks, no paranoia, just a simple mistake with the wordpress software!
You might be wondering why I refrain from mentioning S-E-M-A-L-T? Well, since it seems that now the wordpress software anti-spam measures recognise the company and all talk of it, as spam, I don’t want to risk it happening again, nor do I want to highlight them by linking to them and giving them more backlinks to aid their progress. I would also advise that other bloggers on the wordpress platform refrain from doing the same and be careful what your putting in your posts and what stuff your linking to, as the software is automated and they instantly suspend you without warning. Be careful!
On another note, it seems that this company seem to think that the reply they gave in my other post (A letter from…etc) is sufficient to quell the bad press they have been getting from other net users and bloggers, and have now decided to fiddle with their blog and facebook pages with reference to that post. they seem to think that this is an endorsement to them being regarded as “a proper reputable company”. I don’t know if the fact that they are from a non english speaking country, that the english sarcasm is lost on them, or they really are that stupid. The cheeky bastards are even peddling the statement on their Facebook page, and even so the many comments there are from others either complaining or slagging them off, my acerbic later comments were deleted by them, in which I was saying that I did not endorse them what so ever!
So, I will say it here, once again: “I DO NOT ENDORSE S-E-M-A-L-T WHAT SO EVER, AND THAT I WOULD SAY THAT ANY PERSON WITH CONCERN, TO LET OTHERS KNOW TO AVOID, REPORT OR COMPLAIN PUBLICALLY ABOUT THEM IN ORDER TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THIS DISREPUTABLE COMPANY.”
Please make sure that other web users are aware of just how shady they are in their business, and if possible, let any appropriate authorities know of their antics and methods by alerting them to what they are up to. Even so they weren’t to blame for taking my site down, the web could do without them or their likes. They offer nothing that you can’t already do for yourself, and every little bit of their actions betray them as being the lying, underhand and scheming spammers they are. Lets face it, even wordpress recognise them for spamming (as is evident in their suspension of my site) and word is that the staff there are working on a solution to delete evidence of their botnet’s visits to our wordpress sites and statistics!
I won’t be following up further related posts (unless they really piss me off that is…) my site really isn’t the place to highlight the failings of this flawed company, but even so that is true, It pisses me off when stuff like this happens, it’s just another load of blaggers taking us for mugs, which is just not on. I’m not trying to become some kind of investigative reporter that uncovers plots against society, i’m just a bod trying to help others with the truth. Something that this rotten apple of a company, seems to not like.
The suspension of my blog did make me realise just how much I really enjoy blogging, and the old addage is true about “you realise how much you miss something when it’s gone”.
Happy posting my brothers and sisters of blogland!

Pendraken’s Post our paint campaign on change.org

5 Dec

Rather than you hear me waffle on, I thought I’d lift this straight from Leon’s post from the Pendraken Forum:

https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/royal-mail-lift-the-restrictions-on-shipping-water-based-paints

What is this?
Due to recent changes in their shipping restrictions, Royal Mail will no longer ship more than 4 pots of water-based paint per package, with each pot having a maximum volume of 150ml.  Packages which breach this policy are identified by x-ray and then sent away to be destroyed.  Repeat offenders will then be prosecuted.

Who does this affect?
There are a lot of people in the UK sending or receiving paints, whether for hobby or professional use, and policies like this are also restricting a variety of small businesses.  Thousands of people order water-based paints every week, and we hope to gain enough support for Royal Mail to consider changing the restrictions on these items.

Why are these paints restricted?
We have spoken with various people about this, from Royal Mail themselves, through to the Department of Transport and the Dangerous Goods Office, and so far we have not been given a definitive reason as to why these restrictions exist.  The Royal Mail allows shipping of alcohol of up to 1 litre in volume, even in glass bottles, yet five small pots of paint, less than 100ml total, would be against the restrictions.  We are currently awaiting a reply from the Royal Mail Policy Team with more information on the restrictions, and whether a change is possible.

Should these paints be restricted?
We have provided Royal Mail with Material Safety Data Sheets from some of the more well-known manufacturers of paint, which show that these items are perfectly safe to ship.  We will continue to collect evidence of this type and forward it to Royal Mail.

What is the aim of this petition?
Our initial aim is for a change to the policy to allow a larger volume of water-based paints to be sent in one package, a change to match the 1 litre maximum on alcohol would be ideal.  Even an increase to 600ml total would be a great start.  Many small businesses in the UK are having a very hard time at the moment, and lifting these restrictions would be a welcome boost to a lot of people.

What can I do?
First and foremost, we need people to register their support by joining the petition on Change.org.  If you buy paints on a regular basis, please mention how many paints/occasions you are buying per year on average, as this will help us show the volumes of business RM is potentially missing out on.

If you are a manufacturer or seller of paints, please mention your company name as well.

Finally, please spread the word about this.  We need to get the message out as far and wide as possible, so that we can gain enough support to make a difference.  Please post it on any forums you frequent and any blogs you write, on your Facebook or your Twitter.  The more coverage we can get, the more chance we’ve got of making a change, and then we can all get back to some painting!

Thanks for reading, your support is really appreciated.

https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/royal-mail-lift-the-restrictions-on-shipping-water-based-paints

Please show your support for this and sign the petition! Help spread the word and feel free to reblog this about where you think it might help.
