8th Edition 40k Army: Completed Big Custom Hellbrute!

19 May

prox hellbrute title

DSCF8589

Finally I’ll show the Big Custom Hellbrute in it’s mostly finished form. (I say mostly as since taking these shots, I have added a bit more detail to the base and some more gore…) As you can see from the primaris sized plague marine conversion at it’s side, he is indeed very big boy!

Last off, when I posted a WIP for this beast, I only had a dark green base coat and a few shades of lighter greens drybrushed on it, so since then it has a lot more going off.

I think it turned out OK, loving the face, as it completely changes the model from it’s original Scotia/Grendel Leviathan War Golem form to something unique. Not that there was anything wrong with the original model, but I needed to create a face that gives that Nurgle Chaos vibe rather than the stock face it had. I also had to reposition the arms to give it some level of dynamism that the original lacked (IMHO, no offense!) as the standard pose was very static, and I wanted to give some sense of it lumbering across the battlefield, not just stood there, arms tight at it’s sides.

DSCF8590

Like I said, the face carries it for me. It has a definite Great Unclean one style that locks it in as being Nurgloid in nature, plus is totally unique (since I sculpted it on) I did have to add a lot of sculpted bits to make it seem like it was fused between the hard metal and organic, but the various pipes and tubes that were present in the original helped as well, so adding extra pipes and tubes, or at least the impression of them, was an easy way to help blend the sculpted additions to the stuff already there.

DSCF8591

The second set of clawed arms were added from some Tyranid spares I had, exposed guts bursting out blended well, merging easily into the aforementioned pre-existing tubes already there. The large mass of tentacles were added to insinuate much more mutations inside the machine, reaching out of the spaces at it’s side and under the arm. These also provided some support to the arm that I re-positioned.

The back flat armor areas were kept as intact as I could (Obviously I had plenty of places where the mutations were bursting from) but I wanted enough parts left on the model to paint in the same Death Guard scheme I have for my overall army. Battle damage was carved into the resin here and there to Nurglify? it a bit more, as this thing would draw a lot of fire on the table, so I imagine a monstrosity like this would be torn up a bit! It goes well with the Ceros and Rhino as heavy back up, it certainly starts to make my army a force to be reckoned with!

Overall I like this model, and would recommend anyone to give these little gems a go if you want to add a big lumbering mech type hellbrute/dred to your chaos bois. You can do a lot with these if you use your imagination, swap out the arms, add new heads and features, mutations and more.

Not sure what I’ll run it as, but I have a few things in mind, regardless though, I will be supplementing my troops with him, drawing fire as he slowly makes his way into battle. I do have another Hellbrute on the way, heavily converted from a Reaper Bones Graveyard Golem, but I’m not finished with him yet. Here’s a quick preview.

DSCF8695

This one is more normal sized for a Hellbrute, but I’d say much more converted. I may make one from scratch to complete my trinity, as I have an idea, but I need more suitable parts before I start as I don’t want to just make a start, only then to stop because I am missing bits to finish it!

Hope you liked the pics, I’ll be back next time with more finished pieces and pics of the rest of my lads. Suggestions, comments and so on are welcomed, let me know what you think!

Death Guard Proxies: Nurgle Ceros APC Scratch build. (Proxy Rhino/Landraider Build)

7 Feb

log title ceros1

It’s been ages since I’ve shown off any of my Nurgle Deathguard Army lot, and whilst looking through my photos, I remembered that I haven’t shown you this build.

Given that many who read here are dedicated miniature addicts and tabletop wargamers, I thought it was time to showcase this one, as I am quite proud of this baby. May I present, the proxy Deathguard Ceros pattern APC.

chaos cer1

May I present my scratch built Chaos weapon of mass destruction, the Ceros pattern APC. This is entirely scratch built from whatever I could get my hands on, and from my own imagination. My main aim here was to create a vehicle that would serve as either a Rhino or Land raider type troop transport for my Deathguard boys, and be easy enough to replicate at a tiny fraction of buying a genuine GW or other proxy type. It’s not meant to be flash, or accurate a copy of said APC in 40k, just a cool looking beefy armoured thing to strike fear into the enemy.

chaos cer2

I made a set of templates for the main shape of the un-mutated vehicle, then constructed the body from foamboard, then just Nurgled it up (I know that is not a real word) to make it fit in. I had already made a less diseased looking one for my son (a Khorne version without the mutations) but I’ll post pics of that later. I’m pretty pleased with it to be honest, and given that it probably cost less than £5 to make both in total, my intention was to make a fleet of them for my plague marines. My Army has taken a bit of a respite, but I won’t give up with my plan, and eventually I will get round to completing them, at some point.

chaos cer3

I still have the templates around somewhere, so maybe at some point I’ll release them, or may actually do a tutorial if enough of you out there want that, maybe a PDF book with them included. This one was a test to see what needed doing to it to make them as disgusting as possible, which now I made it, I can say that the next one would be even more weird than this one. I’d like to let my imagination go wild with the other two I plan, maybe some demonic attributes and things bursting out from the hull, far more complex that this one was.

chaos cer4

With the templates it’s very easy to replicate the design, so I would love to build some more, even some standard looking ones and maybe get a small force of normal marines, just to have a bash at them. It’s just that the whole idea of being able to mutate them into unique models really appeals to me, and I’d love to do several different ones, Thousand Sons, Emperors Children, Imperial guard, or whatever, I’d like to have a go at each and everyone of them. Sadly, I won’t get round to them all, things take time, but I will end up doing the other two Nurgle ones, and another two Khornate ones, each getting more twisted as I make them. I can imagine by the last Nurgle one, it’ll be half daemon or whatever, and the Khorne ones will end up bristling with spikes, skulls, weapons and death dealing articles (well, I did promise my young un’ two more) I just thought I’d show this one off, as I’d totally forgot to do so. I’ve even got a whole heap of industrial style modular terrain already built, and I haven’t shown them off too! Very Necromunda, and again made from scratch. If I can get some good lighting to give them a decent set of shots, I’ll do it in the next week, and bear in mind that I created all these things months ago, a long time before many of the various Youtube Terrain channels did similar as well! I’ll be pinning these pics to my boards on Pinterest and would appreciate it if you frequent there, to share them about, and you can see the other finished bits of the Deathguard Proxies there too: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/grimacereaper73/

Please give me a follow and share on there, I actually get a ton of traffic from Pinterest to here, and I quite like the site no I have the hang of it! I don’t have a ton of followers there, but would be very grateful if you are a regular there to give me a follow, it helps this site, and gives me a bit of a boost to see people sharing my content, and it’ll make me more determined to put more stuff on there. (Trust me, I only show a small fraction of hobby related stuff I create, so the boost would give me the incentive to put more stuff up!)

chaos cer5

Like I said, if there is enough people asking for a sort of tutorial type of thing that shows how to make one of these brutes, I will do it, but only if you lot ask, or it will be sporadic when I get round to it. I have too many of my fingers in too many pies, so unless there is a call, I’ll just do it when I can/feel like it! I’m thinking more like a PDF manual type thing, with the patterns in and a load of nice photos, maybe a PWYW or cheapo price, just so the effort is worth my time (I’m a busy dad of 4 sprogs, so time is precious you know!)

If you want to ask anything about how I made it, where I got the bits, how robust it is (yes, it’s quite robust enough to take being knocked about and such) then please do, leave me some likes and comments, heck, ask me to post more shots if you like, or if you want to see the prototype (Khorne) APC, then let me know, and I’ll happily do so.

By the way, if you are wondering what the name of this proxy comes from, well if it’s not obvious, Ceros is the Rhino proxy, so Rhino + Ceros = RhinoCeros! It just seemed fitting!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the pics, don’t forget to check out the Payhip store for stuff: https://payhip.com/grinningskullstudios which is slowly gaining momentum (Thanks for all the views and orders there too!) and the DriveThruRPG pages too for loads of ever growing hobby stuff: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/8807/Grinning-Skull-Studios

(Gotta keep plugging away!!) Again over on Pinterest and our page on Facebook (Give us a like, go on, you know you want to!) If you are a linked in user, feel free to hit me up on there as well on my Linkedin profile page (I’m now a Linkedin L.I.O.N. now, so join my big network if you like! Nearing almost 6500 connections there, so if you use it, check me out there too!) I’m on Twitter too, but not that active, but a follow would be noice!

I’ll be back later with more stuff, perhaps the Khorne APC to show the difference, but for now, I hope you have a great day and may Grandfather Nurgle bestow his pungent effluent upon you (Wow, an Osric Tentacles reference…) I’m almost done finalising the latest Pointless Classics PDF, so I’ll be posting about that too, so see you then!!

40K 8th Ed: Deathguard Army: Custom Hellbrute W.I.P. 1

8 Jun

So I’m trying to get some kind of 8th edition 40k nurgle Deathguard army together, just to get back into the game (haven’t played it since 4th edition) but I really wanted to use as much customised and independent companies stuff instead of GW’s VERY expensive stuff.

Don’t get me wrong, I love their stuff, but being a tight Yorkshireman, and a die hard converter & customiser, a mix of models I like rather than “official” minis is what I’m after.

So, I want to show my current Hellbrute WIP.

It’s base model is the often overlooked Scotia Grendel Leviathan War Golem (found here: http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=292 )

I’ve only just started putting some colours and a bit of drybrushing down on it, but I’m loving the way it’s coming out so far! Here’s a shot from the back.

I’ve added quite a bit of extra nurgley goodness, and am expecting it to turn out lovely (can you say lovely about anything Nurgle?)

Let me know what you think. I’ll be back later to show case some more of my growing forces (finished stuff that is…)

Grinning Skull’s Oddball Outlet: Custom Gamer Chests for sale!

29 Aug

Hello there everyone, In a departure from the usual stuff we have on sale from Grinning Skull Studios, I’d like to show you some physical product for once. Oddball Outlet is a term coined by yours truly, to describe any stuff I’ll be putting out to sell. I have quite a few gaming items coming up for grabs, so keep your eyes peeled.

In a throwback to previous products I’ve done before, I still like to turn my hand to actual objects, so these came about after quite a few private customers requested me to create these hand crafted & finished babies. So, after a successful batch run of our custom Gamer prop chests, I have decided to offer the rest of this batch for sale via eBay sales. I’ll be finishing more over time, but only to use up my remaining stock parts, so these are very limited (I’m not currently taking custom commission orders for these at this point, but might do so in the future, so if you are wanting a truly custom creation, get in touch and we’ll chat…)

These lovely hand finished, custom boxes are perfect for you fantasy gamers out there (but, of course, I’d say that!) So, without further ado, I’ll let the pics do the talking!

As you can see, the above chest, titled “The Arcane Herbalist”, is jam packed with trinkets and stuff, perfect as a gift, or spoil yourself and use as a display piece or prop for gaming, the choice is yours. It could be yours for £30 with free UK postage. You can find the listing for the “Arcane Herbalist” Chest over on eBay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132310231240?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649

This box, “The Fortune Teller” includes all sorts of fortune telling gubbins, it even comes with it’s very own crystal ball. Again it’s perfect as a gift, or a treat to yourself! This comes in at £30 with free UK postage. You can find the detailed listing on eBay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132310239265?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Lastly, we have a standard small gamer chest. These contain 20 coin counters, and a full set of gaming dice. these smaller boxes are ideal to keep your various gaming trinkets inside, or for whatever use you’d like. This hand finished box is available for £18 (again with free UK P&P) and can be found here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132310243617?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

If you’d like to take a closer look at these fine wares, click on the links and it will take you to the eBay page of the product. Also, like I said before, I’m not really taking up new commissions for these (for those of you after custom pieces that is) but may be tempted if you are after something that sounds like it’d be interesting to make (then I may be interested in doing it) reasons being, my time is limited and these take up more than I’d like.

I’ll also apologise for any overseas readers who might be interested, so that being said, I might consider international shipping and purchase, but I would need to sort out shipping prices and insurance etc. Get in touch and we’ll have a chat, but I’m not promising anything (Gimme a good incentive, that might work!)

I’ll be putting some more stuff up over the next few days, lots of 40k books and so on, so keep your eyes peeled!

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Hammer Steam Custom Design Copper Coins on Indiegogo

9 Jun

I wanted to draw your attention to this crowd-funder, that doesn’t seem to be getting any love. Hammer Steam are offering 20 people the chance to get their very own hammered copper coins to their own design specs with this project. Personally, I think that they are quite nice, they have an authentic look and come in a custom box to keep them in.

They seem perfect for LARP and RPG props or counters. My only hesitation is that of the finished designs, if I wanted to design and get myself a set, I’d want it to be exactly how I’d designed it, and judging from the pics, they do seem a bit ropey (the designs that is!) hopefully that wouldn’t be the case.

It’s quite reminiscent of something I’m currently planning (more of that when I have something to show) but I had to show you lot these potentially cool prop coins for your game.

Anyway, check it out on Indiegogo if it looks like something you’d be up for getting for yourself. There are 5 days left and so far, it’s had no takers, but I reckon it’s a project that is worth some love, so show some support and tell them the Grinning Skull sent you!!
