Scratch Building Proxy Rhino APCs for pennies!

Since Well before my Chaos Ceros APC designs, it was always my intention to make myself a large vehicle detachment, so it should come as no surprise that I had to add more of such. Only thing was, I misplaced all my Ceros design templates, so I needed to either try and remake them, or start again but use a closer analog to the traditional GW rhino APC.

You should know that I am not one for carefully measuring and calculating anything. Unless I find it unavoidable, I wing it 100% with whatever I make. My way is not perfect but I hate being stifled by anything other than the creative process. But, I caved and tried harder to make the next additions more in line with sizes, shapes and style.

After a long time of trying to find easy templates in a more GW fashion, I ended up using the ones in Wyloc’s video on youtube. I pretty much only used to dimensions from his vid, just to get that Rhino classic aesthetic, so if you read this Wyloch (which I’m sure for certain he has before in the past) I send my thanks! Just that simple shape was enough to get a new set of templates made to churn out a couple at once, one for my Nurgly bois, one for my sons Khorni bois.

However, after doing this, I ended up finding the Ceros templates, so now I have two different sets. I’m thinking after comparing sizes of the Ceros to the traditional Rhino, the Ceros will be closer to a landraider in size, so generally when I get to fielding them, I’ll be using the Ceros pattern as that. (Unless I end up making a set based on the dimensions of one of the landraider designs, which I probably will!)

The new builds, are surprisingly smaller than the Ceros, very chunky in fact, but since many design parts, materials and elements are the same on the Ceros, they easily fit together in style. I do enjoy the flexibility of personalisation with these scratch builds, so much in fact I want to make a cultist one, crewed by my fervent corrupt human worshipers of Nurgle, who kind of resemble an imperial guard unit anyway, so that is coming, plus I have a separate detachment of Chaos Space Marines from the Purge Chapter which I want a dedicated transport for.

I would fucking love to do one more custom Rhino for the Death guard, but to make it into a plague tower of Nurgle, but I’d like to try making my own version of a Death Guard Plague burst crawler. We’ll see, just there are too many cool things I can think of to personalise them into, and once I’m finished with the Nurgle bois, Tzeentch beckons me to use the CP Models Bird like Avian models as Tzangor, and a pimped out glowing Thousand Sons Rhino with Sphynx accents would be a good model to make. Plus, I get to make a big floating tower model that’s bristling with guns and such, would be fun to make. No real reason behind it, I would just like to give it a go!

I do promise that when I make the next Ceros and Rhino, I will give you a full tutorial, with downloadable templates (that way I won’t loose them!) and when I do, they will be available as PDFs on DriveThruRPG and Wargame Vault. I do miss posting the tutorials like I did with Grim’s Dungeons of Doom, I know a lot of people do get a load out of them and I’ve seen plenty out there trying my methods, which is nice to think I’ve inspired some to get trying.

They do take extra effort and time, as you gotta remember to get decent photos of the stages involved, and it can be tricky to remember doing it when I’m in the zone and focused on getting it made!

Still, the process was quick as I knocked up these two in a couple of nights, followed by a couple of other days painting them (reveal in next posts) I am trying to get myself into the habit of spending less time painting minis, I have a tendency of spending far too long on even the most basic troops and terrain, so I allow myself to be a little more sloppy and hope it all comes together in the end, which I think it does mostly.

With the more limited time I have, it is a good compromise, leaving the more careful jobs to character and special models. I don’t paint for competitions, tournaments or praise, I know I’m not a top painter, but slightly above OK will do me fine.

Next time, I’ll reveal the finished work, starting with the Death Guard Rhino, take you through how I achieved the various looks and materials used a bit more in detail.

After that we’ll take a look at the Khorne version and analyse, then I’ll do a size comparison with the Ceros vs Rhino (I might be able to get some shots of the Khorne APCs too)

Until next post, Stay Sane, Stay Grinning, and Stay inside coz’ there’s a Nurgle about!!

GW’s Age of Sigmar. Should I give a sh*t about it?

20 Aug

So the old Warhammer is gone. Replaced by GW‘s latest brainfart, Age of Sigmar. As an oldhammer player and veteran since 2nd Edition WFB, I’m not sure how to take it. Of course, this effects nothing in terms of playing WFB, I’ll still be able to play, but this new direction GW has taken, leaves me a bit undecided about this new release.

I’ve read tons about it on line, with mixed reviews that usually end up as “meh”, and comparisons to sigmar’s lot being more 40K than Warhammer fantasy. It makes me wonder if it’s not the fault of the game, but rather us old guard making all the noise.

It’s a brave departure for GW to be giving away the rules free, we warhammer players can jump straight in and play no problem (I will, at some point) but on the other hand, I can see their move being a canny conversion tool, designed to suck in existing players to the new stuff. I just think I’m not excited about it at all.

I’m old skool, I was brought up with GWs products and minis, they played a large role in my childhood and beyond, but I’m not crying about how it used to be, but maybe we hold this old period of gaming history in too high esteem. I’m not saying that WFB is the best wargaming system to ever grace this planet, sure it’s ok, but, I think we older gamers are just used to it. We have become set in our ways and hold Warhammer on a pedestal.

On the reverse, there are some things with Age of Sigmar (AoS) that don’t float my boat. don’t get me wrong, I’m still tempted to get the boxed set, who wouldn’t be. Everyone likes loads of miniatures. I just have some issues with the models themselves.

The Stormcast Eternals are my main gripe. I’m mixed about these. Even so years ago there were always going to be a celestial element versus chaos (ala the eternal champion influences from the early days) it had never panned out until now (only the chaos bit was expanded) The forces of order here, are a bit underwhelming, and far too space marine like for my liking. They are ok, but lack some oommff (So to speak)

Alternatively, if Sigmar is developed as a force, does this mean we’ll get some other new forces to represent the other lawful gods of the warhammer pantheon in a similar style? It’s possible, and could potentially create some really cool stuff.

The Khorne stuff in the box is ok, with a few good models and the rest sort of not. Again the similarities to 40k are apparent to me, so maybe this is trying to appeal to 40k players more than the rest. Since the 40k game is way more popular than WFB ever was, its a shrewd marketing move for them to do this, yeah I get it. Its just starting to feel like the warhammer fantasy flavour is from whats bolted on (like you can use your WFB armies and play it now with the free rules) Warhammer and all the miniatures from the previous incarnation, seems like its only now an afterthought to keep loyal WFB players who game in store, happy and subdued.

Just how does this guy manage to wipe his ass?

Also, some of the Khorne stuff seems a bit too S&M slannesh to me. Am I missing something, or is it just me?

I dunno, what it is with this, i’m in two minds. On one hand, this could be good eventually, and getting onboard with the game would be good. There’s a lot of great models coming out, and even though I’m not a fan of the prices GW charge, I’d buy a few bits (the rest from cheaper decent manufacturers!) but, on the other hand, it could be a fail and not interest me enough to play with the game, only to return to WFB or kings of war etc. At least the rules are free. Jesus, you could just play the game without the boxed set and play with whatever minis you like!

With my time, concentration and funds limited, I can’t make my mind up about it.

Please, share your thoughts, do you like it? have you played it? what do you think?

There seems to be a real stink up about the latest stunt being pulled by hobby bully boys, Games Workshop, this time it seems they are trying to assert their IP and clout over their supposed trademark of the words “Space Marine”!

M.C.A. Hogarth is a writer of indie fiction who is in bother over her latest book available on Amazon has caught the attention of the infamous and feared GW legal team over her book “Spots the Space Marine”, a book not connected in any way with the GW war machine.

Apparently they own the term “Space Marine” and are prepared to defend it with an almost 40k like fevour. Ms. Hogarth has had the book pulled by amazon even so she has been requested to comply with the usual bullshit “cease and desist” nonsense they scare any who would dare challenge their Sith like dictatorship they lord over the hobby industry and beyond. Once again the big Orwellian boot of corporate big brother GW tries to stamp on the face of the little guy.

It is no surprise that in their attempt to try and trademark chunks of the english language, they fail to realise the term “Space Marine” was coined many, many years before, and that it’s behavior is going to turn off GW customers in droves, and make the ever growing army of GW haters swell in their ranks!

GW are nothing but a pale ghost of what they once were, once a vibrant and open hearted hobby gaming company that supported many ideas, indie games and truly inspiring products. Now it’s just a puppet show headed by money men and brainwashed sycophants who rule the isolated branded “hobby shops” with a nazi like grip. Hey kids!, if it’s not GW, its not worth shit!

I urge you to show your support and send the GW legal dept a message to see if sheer people power can get them to back down with this crap they are pulling. I will post up the email addy’s of the right departments later for those out there that are too lazy to put in a google search, as well as a copy of my email I intend to send the fuckers! I intend to give them a real anti-GW rant, so I hope to get a funny answer.

Obviously, I will publish the reply I get, lets hope it’s not just a standard blah blah bollocks, but watch this space (Marine!)

Check out Ms Hogarths site via the link below, and lend your support!
